#1 Vintage Software Screenshot Gallery

Post by Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman »

This is a nostalgia thread where you can post (and comment on) screenshots of vintage software you were using.

Well, I'll start with what I considered the software 'triumvirate' in early 1990.

Image
The good old WordStar. I didn't use it for long, though, since I quickly switched to ChiWriter.

Image
Lotus 1-2-3. Of course, it was long before Excel.

Image
Dbase III+. I was still a Junior Highschcool student at that time, and had no need for a database software. Still, having an address book on my PC was quite a blast at that time.

And now, the games.

Image
Digger by Windmill Software. Would you believe once I spent all night long playing this one?

Image
And this is what you called a game's "main screen" those days.

Image
Microprose Soccer; my brother's favorite.

Image
This is Accolade's Test Drive, played in 4-color CGA.

Image
Jordan Mechner's Karateka. This is actually my first "long game" before I was introduced to the likes of Police Quest and Ultima 6. Just a note, Karateka does not have savegame feature.

So be it. If saying "NO" means being alone, then to hell with love, with romance, with marriage, and all the shit life keeps pumping at me. I'll walk alone, but with freedom and a healed pride.

NEVER buy a LiteOn CD/DVD Writer. Ever.

Yup, kewl game, although keep listening to its soundtrack over and over again will eventually drive you nuts  Too bad it ran too fast on my (then) AT 286 when 12Mhz speed was enabled.

(and yes, Ace. I said 12Mhz)

Anyway, like I said, the reason I didn't stay long with WordStar was because I quickly switched to ChiWriter, which, by the way, still ran fine in Windows 31 Command Prompt. IIRC it was actually the first DOS-based word processor with multipe fonts capability, as shown below.

Anyway, here's a screenshot of the good old Autodesk Animator. I wasn't really into graphic and animation, but a highschool buddy named Arga introduced me to this software. Now he was (and is still) a bigger geek than me; he already did video frame capturing in 1993 using an obscure piece of hardware named Video Commander.

Bah. Both Test Drive and Karateka looked MUCH better in the CBM64 release (of course, during the days of 4-colour CGA, most of them did...)
'I wonder how far the barometer sunk.'-'All der way. Trust me on dis.'
'Go ahead. Bake my quiche'.
'Undead or alive, you're coming with me.'
'Detritus?'-'Yessir?'-'Never go to Klatch'.-'Yessir.'
'Many fine old manuscripts in that place, I believe. Without price, I'm told.'-'Yes, sir. Certainly worthless, sir.'-'Is it possible you misunderstood what I just said, Commander?'
'Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a sword a little'
