I'm looking to buy a guitar, a bass guitar to be specific.
Is there anything I need to know prior to purchaseing one? Brands to stay away from, good beginner equipment, size to look for based on height(I'm 5'10" if it matters), anything I might need to know.
Thanks for any help
Edit: This was what I was looking at

Looks exactly like the one I have.
Not that I really play it, though...

Thanks to all who gave me advice. In the end it was kinda unnessary. Turns out one of the guys I work with plays bass and had an old one he didn't use anymore(he just got a brand new spiffy fender) so he hooked me up and gave me his old bass guitar. For free. The price was definatly right. It's in tune, the strings are good and it plays. It's got a few scratches on it but nothing serious and like I said, the price was right so I can't complain about minor crap.
Now to find an amp! and a strap... there is no strap on this thing! ><

No, you're definitely best off playing it unamplified. And without a strap. Works so well for me.
What do you think you're doing, listening to me?

An amp won't be that bad. You can usually find a practice amp fairly cheap. They're generally small, but definitely loud enough if it's just you playing. One thing you should probably invest in: 1/4" Headphones. While you may be excited when the muse hits you at 4am, no one else wants to hear your bass cranked up to 11. That and they're good when you're just starting out and are still fairly self conscious. Or maybe that was just me...

As far as beginner bass amps, the best thing you could do for yourself is buy this. 70 bucks plus shipping, and Behringer makes decent (not great) sound equipment. Should do everything you want it to do, and maybe a litttle more.
