G1 Megatron wasn't insane. Galvatron was fucking nuts but that's another story entirely...
And I can't really comment on BW. I didn't like the series at all. You can ask DS, I'm hardcore G1/G2. Anything that came after, BW, BM, RID, Car Robots, Armada, Cybertron, Energon, etc. are just not TF to me. I'm die hard original.

As someone who was old enough to see the Premiere of G1, I can tell you that BeastWars was a great continuation, and I highly recommend it. Hell, compared to some of the cheeser episodes from G1, BW is Shakespeare.
However, do not bother with BeastMachines. The whole Bio-mech thing just ruined the whole idea of Robots in Disquise. BeastMachines deserves to be deep-sixed.

I'm old enough to remember the G1 series. I was also fortunate enough to be overseas enough to see some of the episodes that the US didn't get to see. Yes, indeed some of G1 was cheesy, campy and downright stupid. But it's what I grew up with and to me it was the original, the innovator, and nothing else can truely compare.

Nah... Both G1 and BW were great, and I love both shows.
I just go back and watch the old G1 eps and twitch sometimes at the cheesiness... same with other old cartoons I loved like ScoopyDoo, GI Joe, and ThunderCats (*really* bad in retrospect!).

Well. For a variety of reasons, I saw BW first, and only got around to the G1 cartoon at the stage where I couldn't help going 'No, no! That's stupid!' Every thirty seconds.

What really made me love BW was the homages to G1, even before the ARK saga. When StarScream comes back and possessed Waspinator, I was thrilled and annoyed it was only that one episode. StarScream always had personality, even if he was the cause of 80% of Decepticon losses because he just HAD to overthrow Megs.

G1 Megatron made me wince often.. He was not the brightest in the kettle. Notice how almost all his schemes fail, and he keeps his worst traitor as his Right Hand Mech and the guy who fires him when he transforms. Not the hallmarks of genius.
Mind you, BW Megs is an evil, scary bastard. He just went solidly batty when G1 Megs got in his head.

It's been suggested that there are outside reasons Starscream doesn't get his head seperated from his body.
One angle I really liked was the suggestion that Megatron somehow had a hand in Starscream's creation, so it's something like a father/son fight, but that doesn't mesh well with alot of the backstory.

Most would say it's rather ridiculous to do the same to a trio of movies made in the late 70s and early 80s not to mention what they would say about pretending to be a superhero...

True, but not what I meant. I mean, Star Wars at least makes some claim to internal consistency; Transformers was a saturday morning cartoon, written primarily for people under the age of ten and- I read this somewhere or other- often written and animated in the same day. Each story is centred around some MacGuffin that Megs puts every fibre of his being into getting at the expense of all logic and ends with a humiliating beatdown at Prime's hands.
Honestly, if you want to quantify TF go for the Marvel comics at least.

I read a fair amount of those comics. They were not overflowing with logic.

They were flowing with more logic than the G1 TV show. Especially once Furman got his hands on them. Seriously, going by the TV show there's no way to cut it except the Autobots and Decepticons being the most hilariously incompetant military forces in the existance of the universe.

I once kicked around a few reasons Megs kept Starscream around
1) Starscream is pretty powerful and fairly useful, when he isn't being treacherous or a coward.
2) The logical reason for Megs to jump to Starscream in gun form is that Starscream is the best shot with him.
3) Keep an eye on Starscream and you keep an eye on all the treachery and discontent in the Decepticon ranks.
4) No one respects Starscream to the same extent they do Megatron. As a potential traitor, his ability to gather support is limited.
5) Once on Earth, Megatron has very few soldiers. To destroy one of his more capable warriors is a drastic step.

It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

Yeah, the current assumption I know of is that 'Scream was the best at his job, enough to overlook his insubordination, and Megs was confident that he could stop any takeover plots. Which was largely correct.

One problem, Soundwave was alot better than Starscream.

Are you kidding? He was the guy in charge of his own private army and running Megatron's spy ring. And actually all the deptivcons could fly. Remember them jumping up into the air?

*Facepalm* So they could. In my defence, I was thinking of the comics (where, shockingly, only the TFs who turned into planes could fly) and the TV show was inconsistant.
Anyway, you prove my point. His skills were: Managing the Casetticons, Creating Energon, Acting as a communications officer, and standing around being quiet. He did those well. Starscream, on the other hand, was very good at two things: Leading the Seekers in being shooty and stabbing Megs in the back. Thusly, he was given a job which would mean that he was AWAY from Megs and busy putting his talents to Megs's use.

Frankly, I vastly preferred Armada Starscream over G1. Sure, he was still a disloyal soldier, but he was honorable and ultimately paid more attention to the world around him than short-sighted goals.
Also, he detached a wing and used it as a sword, and gave Unicron the finger.

Yes, Soundwave was Meg's Intelligence Officer. He was not a master of airborne tactics or as good a shot as StarScream was. Different programming, training, or whatever. Soundwave could not take StarScreams place in any way.
Starscream was the most powerful of the jets, even on Cybertron, and all the jets obeyed him. Since the jets were also the only Decepticons that could fly in Both Forms... this made Starscream very important to Meg's plans.
Soundwave's little army was for his own protection. In every battle I recall, Soundwave was usually barely able to hold his own and needed Ravage, Lazerbeak, and Rumble to help.
