The US Terrorism Plot That the Media Ignores

I just found an interesting article.

In May 2003, white supremacists in Texas were caught with a sodium cyanide bomb, other bombs, illegal weapons, hate literature, fake I.D., and chemicals, including hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. In mid-November, three people pleaded guilty to related charges, while seized documents indicate that there are other co-conspirators at large. The feds have served "hundreds of subpoenas across the country," and the plot has been included in the President's daily intelligence briefings.

But most of us have never heard about it. The only media that saw fit to report about this terrorist plot within the US were a few newspapers and TV stations in Texas. The Web-based news outlet WorldNetDaily ran a story about it, but Google News shows that there hasn't been a word in the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, or any other big media outlet. Why have the media decided that this is a non-story? It's hard to say, but we can say with certainty that if Muslims had been caught with these weapons of mass destruction, fake I.D., gas masks, and books on making explosives, it would've been front-page news for days.

Update: Seven months after the arrests and one month after the guilty pleas, the New York Times finally saw fit to mention this domestic terrorism case—in an opinion piece that spends three paragraphs on the incident. Fortunately, the writer's central point is a good one:

Americans should question whether the Justice Department is making America's far-right fanatics a serious priority.... It is also worrisome that the discovery of lethal chemicals in President Bush's home state was not deemed occasion for a high-profile announcement by Attorney General John Ashcroft or other officials trumpeting the arrests of Mr. Krar and his compatriots. This stands in stark contrast to the department's news media onslaughts whenever alleged operatives for Al Qaeda have been apprehended in the United States.

On the downside, he doesn't mention the media's complicity by ignoring an extremely important story. Will the media only cover terrorism if Ashcroft mugs for the cameras about it? [16 Dec 2003]

It seems the media don't give too much attention to the America's far-right terrorism. The question is: why?

Chemical weapons are considered WMDs. Sadly, to perpetuate a state of fear, most anything chemical and a weapon is now a WMD.

In the case of the milita's and white supremacist, it's old hat. The last time they managed a strike was during the early Clinton adminstation and since then the FBI and other law enforcement have pretty much slide themselves into position to take care of it.

Why isn't far right wing terrorism a worrisome thing for the government? Well

A: As you can see above they're able to head off any major plots, having intelligence resources in place. This is a result of several years work and is being maintained, maintaining a intell network is a bit easier than starting one. With alot of foregin/islamic terror networks we're still pretty damn blind sometimes, no informants. Which means an Islamic plot is more likely to get off the ground.

B: These guys aren't excaltly cold blooded professionals, there have been cases where they've been arrested and dragged to court... And the FBI has to reveal that their bomb wouldn't have worked. At least Osama's boys could make their bombs work right?

C: It's old shit. How many decades have the various retards of the KKK, Neo Nazis and so on been trying to upset the apple cart? The FBI list the KKK has North America's oldest native terrorist group.

D: The only group of people I know of that would refer to Cyanide Salts are the morons in the press, who only care about getting everyone to read their story so they can make money. In the military it's a chemical weapon, not a WMD, you need to work at it to become a WMD. Nerve gas is a chemical WMD. Course the cilivian morons in the white house think Mustrad gas counts so I guess it evens out.

In order for people to be interested, you have to make a sucessful attacks more than once every couple of decades. For example there was quiet a bit of interest in right wing terrorism after the Oklahoma City Bombing.
