I was half-thinking of throwing in, though I suspect in the face of the rampant nihilism of 40k I would wind up doing gallows humour and dry wit. Which may or may not fly with the crowd here.

Well, that being said, I'm still a bit of a noob at 40k. Then again, as entire systems vanish into storms for mileenia, I could easily rig a Chapter or Regiment or whatever that vanished in the far earlier days, and has returned to find themselves 'Strangers In A Strange Land'. A handy trick for an author finding his depth. Mind you, the original idea, a Techmarine from such, might be just a bit overpowered...

There are any number of ways, depending on your concept. Very few individuals in the Imperium have any grasp on the larger picture. Your average Guardsman can name several prominent worlds in a subsector or sector, usually the ones he's fought on. The Space Marines are intensely focused on their duties and know generally (though not always) know their Chapter Lineage well. (The Blood Ravens are a prime example of a Chapter that is utterly ignorant of how they were founded and when.)

This setting is very un-cosmopolitan.

True; think less 21st century, think more 8th century.

Still, a world locked away for Mileenia ruled by the Chapter I made up way back when almost works; it would make such a Adeptus a nice foil for the proposed Deathwatch, as I beleive the policy Way Back When was 'Xenos who play nice can live'. Plus, I get an instrinsic cool image of a Techmarine hoisting a bike and beating someone with it with his servo-arm. But I silly.

There was never a general tolerance of the xenos, but the Crusade did prioritize between those that were true threats as well as those who had actually subjugated human populaces, and those that hadn't. That policy is still sort of in effect- a planet that has a harmless pre-space xenos civilization will probably be ignored until such time as the world is earmarked for colonization, at which point they will be ruthlessly exterminated.

However, there are no 'lost chapters' from the pre-Heresy era, because back then there were only the Legions, twenty in all. The loyalist legions were broken up into chapters post-heresy in order to prevent another centralization of power such as occurred under Horus from ever happening again. At best, you could have a long-lost chapter from that immediate post-Heresy period, which would definitely have very antiquated attitudes by modern standards.

Was broadly what I meant; it would be signifigantly more liberal than the modern stage, because there was less time for the records to be, ahem, clarified by His Holy Emperor's Adeptus Lexiconus.

Plus, a single marine, even of officer quality, could be explained as apart from his unit if his Chapter was liberal. A 'death mission' to try and appease the hardliners when he does something over the line, with the explanation being 'It is the crucible of the God-Emperor. Should he die, he dies for his heresy and served the Inquisitors. Should he live, clearly He has passed judgement.'. For the Rome-esque Imperium, a Gladiatorial sentence.

Yeah, missions of atonement are certainly not unheard of.

And now...

I suddenly have an urge to write a Memoria scene on the cleansing of Smurfar VII, led by Inquisitor Gargamel.

I was thinking more..

'XENO TECH! YOU USED UNAUTHORIZED XENOTECH TO PERFORM THAT REPAIR! The verdict is death by incineration!'

'And because of it I saved twelve Inquisitors!'

'Wait, what? Were they anyone I like? Well. Uh. You are exiled to this shit-ass system to serve the Inquisitors loyally! Should you survive,' *chortle* 'The God-Emperor will have purged your spirit of it's stains.'

And of course, the Xenotech was probably a dropped flamer used to spot-weld something.

Brother-Captain Uriel Ventris of the Ultramarines IV Company and one of his brothers were assigned to one such mission in Dead Sky Black Sun for gross violation of Codex Astartes doctrine, so there is certainly precedent.

I am pondering which Chapter to use. A Velociraptor would yield a pragmatic, almost friendly opportunist, whereas an Archon of Righteousness (name still under construction) would be arrogant and aloof, as well as more hard-line.

And I wish GW would hurry up with the damn Alienhunters codex, but I digress. *mutter mutter*

I think I will be introducing my new creation, brought on by the image of towering Astartes loose in a Smurf village, hosing the area down with promethium.

Yes, the Firehawks, who love their flamers...

(Promethium-rich homeworld and all.)

Somewhere I'll get to work them in.

From what I've seen from you on 40k, you have a good grasp on the material. I don't see there being any problems if you decide to join us and you are quite welcome to do so.

Lord Inquisitor Gargamel. Your new monodominant boss?

And unlike last time, Space Marines are all good. Hell, given General-Grievous over there, you might be able to get away with Space Marine officers.

Since we've got half a century inbetween the chapters, would everyone agree to opening a bridging Memoria thread here, and keeping all "Prequel" Memoria back at SDNet?

It's really up to you guys. I know of no reason why he couldn't be brought in immediately, promoted to Commissar-General after a decade or two and then brought in, or anything else you want to do with his career.

Well, he's already tagged. Varian isn't terribly inclined to let him run lose for a decade or two.

Second, he's already older than normal. Every indication are that most telepaths considered "safe" are picked up in the early teens. Einsenhorn, Draco, Sternberg's Interrogator, and what's her name from Grey Knights were all picked up in their teens. So waiting might just get him shot.

There's a hole in your arguement Stormbringer. Psychic power normally manifests in the teens. All that your examples tell us is that their power manifested at the usual age.
