"Yeah. Wasn't Masks, unless their bodies manage to somehow lie after the soul has fled. But that's a matter for tomorrow." He paused.

"Hmmmmm." Gaheris shifted his gaze to scan the rooftops across the street. "Has Brother Tanthius still not returned? I asked him to make sure that Solarian reached his destination safely, but last I'd checked, he hadn't come back."

No matter how great the temple, or how small... if there is food, there will be vermin. And to combat the vermin, there are cats.

Thus, Torma was soon entertaining the bravest of the felines, who were making themselves comfortable upon the piled mattresses and, daringly, upon the warm bulk of the dragon herself.

If it wasnt' for the fact the pricking of claws kneading her felt pretty nice, Torma might object. With a smile at the thought of the look on Gar's face when he walked in, Torma closed her eyes and settled back into her own catnap, ready to wake at the slightest movement in the hallway outside.

Gaheris turned his head to look at Dreslin. "Captain?"

"Yeah, he did. Not to long ago. He was pretty tired and stressed. The attacks making people jumpy. He also though he had picked up a shadow, which he ditched. Ate time."

Gaheris chuckled. "You know me too well, Dreslin. I'll see you tomorrow morning at watch change." Gaheris turned and went back into the abbey grounds, making for the monastery and the guest rooms.

Movement in the hallway outside.

One eye cracked open the merest slit, watching the door handle. Amusingly, the feline horde around her had also heard the footsteps outside, and were awake enough to lazily turn their heads in that direction.

Which would be funnier... leap and scream? or just Torma the Catbed?

Gaheris moved as silently as he could towards the room [14+24=38], although he knew it would be useless. He swung the door open, bracing for whatever the little dragon would do.

"Oh... you're back." Torma said, her head rising from the nested mattresses and swarm of feline bodies.

It would have been a graceful, dignified movement, were there not a small fuzzy orange-striped kitten clinging tightly in terror between Torma's stubby copper horns.

The slight pricking of the kittens claws must have been felt, as Torma's eyes rolled up in an attempt to see what was up there, tilting her head from side to side. Unfortunately, the silently terrified kitten was just the right size to hide in the blind spot on the top of Torma's head, and the tilting was only making it dig its tiny claws deeper into the dragon's scales to hang on.

Torma couldn't have planned a better joke. The question is who was the butt of it: herself, the kitten, or Gaheris.

Gaheris gave her an odd look. "Yes, I am," he whispered. "Where'd the cats come from?" He checked the east-facing window to ensure that it was open so that he would rise with the sun, and then removed his weapons and cloak in preparation to sleep.

"From the kitchens, I suspect... that's how they smell," Torma answered, giving up on dislodging the scaredy-kitty from between her horns. "They crept in the window to investigate, it seems. They're the only ones that have shown any interest in this room, if you're asking." Her head turned to watch him as he moved about the room, unashamedly watching him undress.

"So... since I don't see the tiny orange fluffball... I'm wearing her, aren't I."

Gaheris chuckled. "Yes, you are," he said in a low voice, tinged with amusement. His eyes took on a faint but steady blue glow at the rims as he decided on a hunch to be more thorough in looking at the cats.

Torma grinned wider, bobbing her head up and down until the kitten finally voiced a protest. "I may keep her... after all, I'm learning sorcery... all sorcerers have familiars, right?" she laughed.

Gaheris smiled sleepily and he pulled Shadowguard over his head, leaving the tunic on, and climbed into his bed. "Not all, but most. Best get some sleep; we'll probably have a busy day tomorrow."

Barring a disturbance, he would be asleep in moments; getting sleep when you could was a skill you learned when living on the streets and in the field.

As the adventurers slept a meeting was taking place in a space devoid of life. "My lord," the human grovelled.

"You have failed," his master replied.

"They were strong lord."

"You will have a chance to attone. I will be arriving to supervise. Track them, but do nothing."

"I obey."

Mr. Toad made a loud croaking sound to wake Astinius up in the morning. Well, it wasnt really awakening him, but the elf equivalent.

The mage stood up from the chair he Tranced on, and got to feeding his familiar. He opened a jar on a desk and took out a hand full of insects. he presented them to the amphian who didnt waste any time shoveing them all nearly simultaneously into his mouth.

Astinius then started reading from his spell books

Malkamar slowly rose in the dark cell he had taken. He avoided the monks and priests here; they likely weren't going to trust a Shadovar, no matter how highly recommended. That was normal. He would merely stay in a low profile and wait until it was time to stride forth and deal with the opposition again.

He meditated, touching the shadows in himself that let him use his powers.

Gaheris arose as the sky was showing the first hint of the grey pre-dawn. Doubtlessly awaking Torma, he moved to the basin in the corner of the room and removed his tunic to wash his upper body, displaying a large, round scar just below his right shoulderblade. He quickly washed himself off and opened the chest against the wall to select new clothing for the day.

The little orange kitten was still perched between Torma's horns, although the rest of her feline bed-mates had already vanished for whatever porriage or mild the kitchencrew might have set out for them. When Gaheris rose the kitten had stood up in alarm, eyes as green as Torma's own opening in kittenish fright.

"Do you always get up this early, Gar...?" Torma asked before yawning widely. It was a sight that would frighten lesser humanoids, as her jaw unhinged slightly and revealed a deadly array of needle-sharp fangs before sleepily snapping shut.

What made it nearly comical was the little kitten yawning nearly immediately afterwards, then getting to its paws and arcing her back in the morning stretch, almost in synch with Torma as she too rose, arcing her back with a rattle of wingspines. However, Torma was being careful how she moved her head, so not to knock the kitten off.

"I can't do a good stretch in here..." Torma complained, sitting back on her haunches as she watched Gar wash up. For a human, he was rather handsome. "Nasty scar. I'm assuming the one who gave it do you is long dead?"

"Probably, but I don't know. At least two got away," he said as he pulled a padded grey tunic over his head to support the chain shirt.

"That's a souvenir from my boyhood, when I was fifteen years old. It's from a crossbow bolt to the back, delivered by Night Mask assassins outside the Chapel of Resounding Justice. That was before I knew Tyr, much less entered his service." He slid Shadowguard over his head as he continued.

"I'm here to bring justice for all the Night Masks' victims, but I won't lie. I'm leading the Westgate chapter because I know the city, but it's also, in a deep corner of my soul, personal."

"How old are you now..." Torma asked out of curiousity. She herself had seen seventeen summers now. She'd met Gar when she was much younger, just leaving the nest, so to speak.
