Roslin's decision is about the only thing you can reasonably expect. Prosecutions will take too much time and will lead to, as what happened in season one, witch hunts. Given the level of 'evidence' the Circle was considering, any potential trial would be a farce. Secret tribunals full of self-appointed judges, juries, and executioners are an even worse idea.
Tigh's a prick, but at least he believed in what they were doing. Starbuck and the Dipshit just wanted their pound of flesh. The two birds were also just there to rubber stamp everything. Only Anders and Tyrol bothered to act like a real jury, and Anders left because he could tell justice wasn't in the group's vocabulary.
Good thing Gaeta survived. I liked how he refused to beg even though it might have saved his life. Any lesser man would have smugly told them they wouldn't be standing there if it weren't for his inside help.

I don't think it was pride or courage behind Gaeta's action (although I do think he has plenty of both) but survivor's guilt. He seems to be carrying the burden of feeling that there somehow more he could have done (although he did a lot) and his contributions to Baltar's campaign that helped get him elected and most of the fleet subsequently conquered by the Cylons.
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

And this episode shows again why Helo is among my favorite characters in the show. He always just does the right thing. Gaeta seemed a little against the plan too, notice his hesitation when relaying the order to execute the prisoners? But that might just be me seeing that because I like the guy.
And nice to see Athena continue to grow.
EDIT: Listening to the podcast right now and Ron Moore said the QUOTE OF THE DAY: he said that there was one scene shot where a wee bit of Tricia Helfer's nipple showed and the network guys said no-no and to this on the podcast Moore said "oh no we can't have a Janet Jackson moment on Galactica THE WORLD WILL COME TO A FUCKING END!"
I lol'd. I am a big fan of the podcasts.

I'm in the Adama camp here. If this bomb had been dropped you can give up any pretense of being any better than the Cylons. And it's one thing to say "Yar kill 'em all!!!1" but I'd really like to see someone actually push the button, or in this case pull the trigger.
When Roslyn said "I see you're passing the buck" to Adama, after he had said under the law the decision to deploy a biological weapon rests in the hands of the President, I almost wanted to shout at her to STFU. Dipshit, the decision does rest in the hands of the topmost Executive of the goddamn fleet. But then, this is the same bitch that spaced Leobin (an unarmed prisoner), was going to space Sharon (until she was told the toaster could find her the Tomb of Athena), and took baby Hera from her parents. Roslyn's burned up any sympathy from me.
Though she does have a point, ultimately this is about survival.
This brings me, in a roundabout way, to my gripe: this was a shit episode. The two sides had some good arguments, even though I'm in the Helo and Adama camp here I can see exactly where Roslyn and Lee are coming from, and can even agree with them that this is about survival. That said, the way this episode chickened out filled me with contempt. There was a compromise solution to this that wasn't even broached: keep the Cylon plague victims alive indefinitely, keep them as a deterrent.
In fact, that's the natural solution to this moral quandary. Like it or not, the Cylons are relentless, and that means you have to pull out all the stops to fight them. It's hilariously stupid to both deploy all your ordnance in one hit (which the Colonials were going to do) or deny your side an advantage when you're already outnumbered or outgunned (what Helo did).
Also, how in the fuck do the Colonials fucking know about 'Cylon supply lines'? Total bullshit. This, coupled with the fucked up artificial suspense at the start, just ruins this episode for me. Space is Big, or rather, Real Fucking Big, and for the Colonials to *know* where the Cylons supply lines are is just ludicrous. It ruins my SoD. I watched this episode and it completely lost me there. It's a total 'rabbit out of the hat' moment of writing.
The other thing I didn't like about this episode was the reset button being pressed, though I reserve an opinion on that until it becomes clear in subsequent episodes if this was a two-part go-nowhere story or if it has wider implications; the Colonials still have the virus, they just don't have a convenient mode of delivery. Whether or not the writers will remember that remains to be seen.

This week's was pretty good. Adama screen time is the awesome, and we got a lot of it, and more starship porn! The battlestar Valkyrie was like all battlestars, beautiful, though I'm sure they had to not show much of it for budget problems (they had to destroy Pegasus because they didn't have enough room for the set any more), and the fact this is a drama, not a starship porn show, and it wasn't necessary anyway.
I also like that we see more of Tigh, and I'm sure his issues aren't gone. I really hope he doesn't displace Helo though; I like him. And in the previews looks like we will be seeing Anders again, good. Though next week makes me think of the classic episode where Starbuck is playing pyramid and is accused of killing this other player, wonder if something similar will happen here? I pretty much hope not.
Anyway, Bulldog seems like a decent dude, and I'm sure we will see more of him. The writers don't seem to introduce characters without bringing them back time and time again.
The Adama resignation thing was kinda wtf, but he probably wasn't thinking straight. I just didn't see him as being the quitter type.
Minor gaffe: on the Valkyrie, Adama was wearing Admiral insignia for a scene instead of Commander. A costuming error no doubt, but the big admiral one stands out and I noticed it.
Also Tigh and Starbuck seem to be much closer now than before, which I like. Growth there.
And lastly, good tie ins back to the mini here.
Good episode.

I liked this episode. It was a refreshing return to the quality I expect from nBSG which last week's episode failed to uphold. I hope they do not sweep Bulldog under the carpet but use him again. He might be suffering from PTSD but they need all the experienced pilots that they can get.

It's likely we'll be seeing more of Bulldog. With the rumours of cast fatalities and the fact that the writers seem to latch on to characters, even those designed as one-shots like the nuggets in training episode (and how much of Cat and Hot Dog have we seen since then?), there's plenty of room for more Bulldog.

RISE!
Ok so season three has resumed after the mid-season break. Thoughts?
I think this was a solid episode. I rewatched the first part prior to watching part two, and I found it lacking. The conclusion was a lot more entertaining that part one was. Usually, the reverse happens - the cliffhanger is what captivates you and the conclusion is never satisfactory. However, I think this episode did a lot of good.
For a start, I'm glad that Baltar has now been captured. I'm glad that Sharon and Helo are reunited with their baby.
Best part was Helo telling the President just how big a hypocrite she was. That was superior acting from everybody involved - EJO, Tahmoh, and Mary MacDonnel. Second best was Dee slapping Starbuck. Ostensibly, it was to bring the other out of a stupour and get her to focus, but we know why Dee did it. Nice that she wasn't hung out to dry like she has been... all season.
Worst part may have been the "Loller I drew the Eye of Jupiter way back when I was bohemian artist!" I also hated the whole supernova plot. I would rather they had simply gone over every inch of the temple with a fine tooth comb, found everything they could find, and taken pictures, and the clue would somehow be deciphered later onboard Galactica.
Now, I hope to hell the rest of the season kicks the shit out of the first half. I'm sorry, but this season has thus far been positively mediocre with a few stand out episodes thrown in. But, for the moment, my faith has been restored.
EDIT: Unfortunately, no nuclear devices were detonated this episode. You know there's going to be nukes going off sometime this season. Nukes went off in the miniseries, season one, and season two. it's gonna happen. :P

Well, I wasn't impressed. I am a big fan of the acting from Olmos, and I still like Helo, but I am really hating most everyone else. Not dislike or find a little annoying like Wesley Crusher, but actually hate. Doesn't make me care much to come back.
The whole nova thing was a butchery. I don't think the writers have any idea what a nova is. It requires a small companion star around a larger star accreting matter into a layer around it. When this gets big enough, it undergoes fusion and blasts off the little star, causing an explosion called a nova. This can happen to a pair of stars many times over their lifetimes. They also detected it with time to spare, which is somewhat realistic, but the absurd way it destroyed that planet isn't so realistic, and wouldn't be their big worry: radiation would have been, which would not have been so spectacular. Maybe the Galactica's armour protected them though.
I despised with a passion the Starbuck religious nonsense. Might as well change her name to Moses and be done with it.
I liked the replacement of 3 with Stockwell's dude. Hopefully, we will indeed see more of him - I actually like his character, and he is an excellent actor.
And the Starbuck / Dee / etc thing needs to die. Hopefully next episode will consist of them blabbering about their problems in the airlock and someone "accidentally" opens it not 30 seconds into the episode and it is never mentioned again, and the survivors just move on from their deaths and get back to the whole making humanity survive thing.
So weak episode, IMO, next week also looks questionable. As to the season as a whole, it is not doing super well, but not quite bad yet. The season opening was pretty excellent, and there were another couple good ones tossed in, so if they move on in the coming episodes, it should be able to get back on track.

I don't hate any of the characters except Starbuck, and some of the Cylons. Anyway, I liked this episode because the plot actually moved. It actually inched somewhere. I have detested the last three episodes because the plot just went nowhere. The boxing match ep was boring, so was the Kat dies ep, and the set up ep was also lacklustre. This episode had a lot of things go on.
And Caprica Six is on the Galactica. That's just a guess, but I think it's a good one.
EDIT: Actually Starbuck did the right thing this episode, by telling Dee that Lee wouldn't cheat on her. Starbuck has a lot of problems as a character and as a human being, but I think she might just get redeemed this season. Maybe. I hope so. I think that her arc has been on a downward spiral on purpose and they're gonna write her as get up from where she's fallen.

It seemed like way too much stuff got crammed in, especially at the end. I am also tired of the love square and I am not optimistic about next week's episode.
The Starbuck religious stuff has been in there since season 1. Rosalyn told her (when convincing her to go get the Arrow of Apollo) that they're just replaying events that occur over and over again, and all of them have some sort of role they must play. Basically telling Starbuck that she has some destiny foretold in their religion. Then she goes to Caprica (and I checked the old episode - that painting is on her wall) and the Cylons are all interested in her because she "has a destiny." And now this. So, while she really annoys me as a character, this destiny thing doesn't really bother me. Destiny tends to be a bitch anyway.
I still say that Earth is the original home of humanity. The Thirteen Tribe could find the way on their own because they already knew where it was. Everybody else was stoned or something, though, so they left clues behind to tell everyone how to follow them.
Okay, silly stuff:
1) So, when did they jump into the Star Trek galaxy, anyway? There's bizarre astronomical shit all over this area.
2) The Final Five are apparently the Ku Klux Klan. White, robes, hooded...no wonder the Eights aren't trusted and the token black Cylon never gets any screen time.
3) I could make a dozen jokes about Baltar's new Jesus look, each one worse than the previous.

Finally, some filler that didn't totally suck. I wish they'd shown episodes like this earlier on the series. I really wouldn't have minded some "life sucks in the fleet" eps in seasons 1 and 2 sprinkled in here and there. In fact, I expected some, considering how few people and resources are left and how so many, many little things can now threaten the very existence of the human race.
Now when I said it didn't totally suck, I didn't mean that I'm not torn over it. It seemed very trite. Stuff gets wrapped up way too fast at the end. I was expecting a two-parter when I saw it was a quarter-til and nowhere near completion. Also, why the hell are people listening to Baltar? Don't they remember him as the SOB who sold them all out and then went running off with his robot buddies?
At least it looks like Starbuck bites it next episode.

Yeah, agree on the sudden ending, but other than that, I pretty much liked it. Again, Edward James Olmos shined and James Callis gave a good performance, so that was fun to watch.

Holy Frak. They actually did it. They actually killed off a major character.
Unless there really was a Cylon ship that time, there's no way she's coming back.

Maybe, maybe not. Several possibilities exist:LadyTevar wrote:Holy Frak. They actually did it. They actually killed off a major character.

-She's one of the final five. She wakes up somewhere and comes back that way.
-She's the descendant of the final five, and they, having found the way between life and death, take her at the moment of her death and spirit her away to that other place.
-Whatever is truly driving Baltar and Caprica has been manipulating Kara all along and does something similar
-She ejects, and the crazy Cylon ship that blinked in while both Kara and Lee's vipers were in the same shot picks her up.
-DREAM SEQUENCE. Yeah, I know, not likely, at least I hope not.

I think it makes complete sense for Starbuck to actually be dead. She'd obviously been losing her mind for the past year or so, with the stuff on New Caprica, the whole Apollo thing, and then feeling pressured that she's supposed to fulfill this grand destiny. No one else saw the raider, so it's possible she was imagining it, like everyone suspected.
She was unfit to fly, simple as that. This is why the Apollo drama was acceptable to me: it was having an effect on her, and didn't just end with a "reset button." She wasn't the hotshot super-pilot anymore, and the stress of living up to that didn't help. Classic tragic hero stuff.
Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if they brought her back with any of those plausible reasons.

She's dead until they decide that she's not.
Anyway, are they actually getting to Baltar's trial now, or are they going to try to write themselves out of a corner?
I miss stuff blowing up.

Something I'm not liking about the show in general now is it doesn't feel like they are running for their lives anymore.
In 33, which I still call among the best of the series, the end had a baby born, and Roslin added one to the survivor counter board, and it was kinda awesome, both in and out of universe.
Throughout much of season 1, the survivor board was a constant thing and meant something. When is the last time we saw it recently? If it was on screen, I didn't care.
And then with the main characters (both human and cylon), I hate so many of them I want to see them dead, which obviously is no good. When you start rooting for the Daleks to show up and exterminate them all (now that would be a sight), something has gone wrong.
Sure, you could say 2 years or whatever have passed in the show, and the survivors would move on, but it just doesn't feel the same.

I've brought this up, but the mindless nBSG fans who love this show and consider the greatest sci-fi show EVER MADE won't accept that. To them, constant Cylon attacks will diminish the menace the Cylons have.
You can try arguing with them if you like, you can be logical and factual and so on, but they're borderline Trektards in the way they reject any criticism of the show.

Baltar is also one of the characters I still like. The guy has been in a lot of hard places, and certainly has not always made the right call, but I still feel like I care about him. I'm definitely for his acquittal, and with the prosecution's incompetence (focusing on a him accepting an offer he couldn't refuse isn't a good plan), it should happen.
In any case, this week's was one of the few in the last couple months that I pretty much liked, and am actually looking forward to next week, something I haven't done since the season opener.
