Total and utter failure greeted Astinius. Not the disruption one would expect of spell resistance interfering or targeting a location where scrying was difficult, but the nothingness of impenetrable scry wards.

"Bastards have scrying wards up. Whatever they are doing, we will have to use mundane methods to track them"

Gaheris looked disappointed. "Then I'll get word out to the agents. Are you sure there's no other magical means to trace the teleport?"

"Possibly a discern location spell, but that wont give me a location exact enough that I can teleport to it. We may be able to walk in, but chances are a mage who can cast gate and summon two pit fiends and pay them will be well prepared for that"

"If there's a spell that can punch through the scrying wards, we need to use it. There's no choice." He sighed and leaned heavily on the temple wall, underneath the bas-relief carvings. "I must see to the men and help take stock of the casualties. We'll get moving within the hour; there's no time to lose." He turned and walked into the temple.

After a short while, Gaheris exited the temple and went over to the monastery to his room. Once there, he pulled out his disguise kit and went to work. [+16 modifier; DM rolls secretly.]

Once disguised, having painstakingly darkened his skin, blackened his hair, carefully applied a thin false beard, completely changed his clothes to resemble those of a well to do commoner, and locked Bright Edge in his trunk in favor of concealing daggers and a sap in his clothing, he looked up into the mirror. Satisfied, he sat down at his small writing desk and began writing short instruction notes written in Vara'Dome jargon and code words.

The compass has gone missing.  Suspect Alna may have misplaced it; be sure to ask her if you see her.

The short message, if written in plain Common, would say that the Abbot (the compass) had been kidnapped by perpetrators unknown that were probably not Night Masks (Alna) and to immediately try to discover his location, but to the casual reader who was not a trained Vara'Dome agent, the note would not mean much.

He made several copies of this note with slight variations in wording and folded them tightly, ready for placement in dead drops.

[Three daggers and a sap concealed in his clothing; Sleight of Hand 32, 20, and 28 to conceal the daggers, 20 for the sap.]

"So, how do I look," he said to whichever member of the party he came to first.

Torma snorted, and the kitten on her back yawned dramatically before repositioning herself more comfortably. "I guess a human would not notice, but I can see how false it is," the copper told him bluntly. "You should change your scent, if you can. You smell too clean for the gutters."

"She has a point there... But it is doubtful they...wait... nevermind I am sure if they can summon pit fiends and construct scrying wards a deity will have a hard time piercing, they will have a very well trained hell-hound at their disposal" Astinius said as he scuttled in

Gaheris sighed. "If they're running about with hellhounds on the streets of Westgate in broad daylight, then there are bigger problems," he said. "I'm not planning on storming into their strong point in this getup, even if I knew where it was. I'm just going to go meet with a few of my agents."

Gaheris sighed. "Torma, I can't be with you every waking moment of every day. Let's do try to think about this. If I went out to leave instructions for my agents with a dragon following along behind me, do you think I wouldn't be spotted and watched by everyone and their dogs?"

"Indeed. Sometimes the best course of action is no action. If they are watching us though mundane or magical means, they will see us here and assume he is as well... speaking of which" The mage trailed off and began muttering. In a few seconds a beam of light struck Gaheris on the head

"You will remain undetectable by magical means unless they get the direct intersession of a deity to find you"

He turned back to Torma. "I promise, I won't be gone long. But this must be done."

Gaheris walked up Silverpiece Way, still disguised, on his way back to the abbey. He paused outside Greensward & Sons Jewelers and went inside. This would be his last stop before taking a roundabout route back to the Abbey.

"Master Greensward, good morning," he said cheerily as he moved to inspect a display of lower-end jewelry, stuff that a man of the station he was disguised as might consider gifting to his wife. The particular pattern of displays he would look at (including one that would obviously be out of his price range) would be the signal of his affiliation to the jeweler.

Gaheris nodded. "The morning hasn't actually been so good, Damien," he said grimly in a low voice. "You probably heard about the pit fiends. The survivor kidnapped the Abbot."
