God, reading some of the negative reviews even makes me want to defend it. Especially the moronic OMG PERSIA IS IRAN NOW DIDJA KNOW THAT bullshit.

Hey guys, historical elements tend to repeat constantly. Quit acting like everything is targeted commentary.

Maybe next time they'll go the Sum of All Fears route and substitute in the safe-to-hate South African neonazis.

Really the lack of historic knowledge by some people is fucking appalling. Hell, the lack of recent past knowledge (that the graphic novel 300 [which the movie is a shot for shot adaptation of) was published in 1998 - 3 years before the "War on Terror").

That said, I watched it last night, managed to get a chance to goto the local theater, and I found it was awesome.

Not a historically accurate adaptation, but Miller's graphic novel wasn't historically accurate. The Slo-mo, while sometimes a lil annoying (like at the begining with the Persian emissary riding to Sparta), during the battlescenes, the alternating slow mo, surprisingly fast action made it more brutal.

I recommend it, heartily. Go expecting a awesome action movie, nothing else.

Considering it's a movie version of a comic book about a movie which was based on a highly exagerrated account by the world's first historian 2,500 years ago, it's actually not bad in realism terms...

Of course, the real battle was itself, if anything, even more dramatic.

All sorts of badass.

The queen/council plot was completely unneccesary and I thought weakened the movie tremendously, but other than that it was rather awesome. Only more historically accurate than, say, books about how the moon landing was faked, but I don't go to see movies for historical accuracy.

I liked it. I saw it on IMAX. It was big.

Yeah, not much to say aside from what's already been said.

Honestly, I don't know if I will see it. I'm not a big Frank Miller fan, in fact I'm not a fan at all, and I am not impressed by Spartan wank (while at the same time deriding Athenians), but that said it does perhaps warrant a look.

What the hell? It's one throw away line by a Spartan Character and Spartains really did think the Athenians were sissies!

The Spartans may have thought the Athenians were sissies, but the Athenians won that war.

Great! But the bloody movie ain't about who won the fucking war now is it?

And my entire point isn't about an issue with one throwaway line, now is it? What you chose to reply to was what I chose to place within brackets, at the same time I was saying I didn't like the emphasis on the Spartans.

I replied to the brackets because everything else you said was more or less kosher. There is nothing wrong with not liking Miller's work, that's a personal opinion of what you enjoy or do not enjoy. You not being impressed with Spartan wank is another personal issue, although in all honesty I'm not sure what it has to do with the movie. I am deeply unfond of the Spartains personally (bunch of paranoid fascist slave drivers) but I still managed to enjoy a bloodly action soaked war movie.

As to the emphasis on the Spartians... The Story from when the anicent greek historians first penned it is about them! There is no way to discuss the story without having emphasis on the Spartians despite their lack of numbers in the battlefield. [/quote]

Chris, it doesn't deride Athenians at all (besides on line of dialogue), it's just Thermopylae from a Spartan perspective.

(But it still sucked.)

*waves penis around* STILL THERE, BITCH.
