Police in India have arrested the owner of a clinic near Delhi on suspicion of illegally aborting female foetuses.
The arrest followed a raid at the clinic in Gurgaon in Haryana state. Officials say the remains of several foetuses were found in a well nearby.
Police say clinic owner Dr AK Singh faces a number of charges. His son told Reuters news agency he was innocent.
According to one report, 10 million female foetuses may have been aborted in India over the past 20 years.
India, where boys have traditionally been favoured over girls, banned gender selection and selective abortion in 1994.
Skulls
The chief medical officer of Gurgaon district, SS Dalal, said the raid on the clinic, the Buella Nursing Home, followed a written complaint that illegal abortions were being carried out there.
"We have found several skulls and bones of foetuses that have been sent for forensic examination," Dr Dalal told the BBC's Jyotsna Singh.
A team of health experts went to the clinic late on Wednesday evening with one of the members posing as an ordinary patient.
Health officials say the search for more foetus remains is continuing.
"Dr AK Singh is not a qualified doctor and we suspect he was carrying out sex selective abortions with the help of his wife who is a qualified nurse," Dr Dalal said.
He said that Dr Singh did not have a licence to carry out ultrasound tests, commonly used for sex determination of foetuses.
Dr Singh's son, Sonu, said his father was innocent.
"Everything is political," he told Reuters news agency.

Indeed... Both India and China are going to be suffering for that short-sightedness. Expect a Chinese Revolution within 10 years, as these young men grow to 'marrying age', and discover there are no wives to be found. All that frustration will come out as violence.

There's no logic to it, just a cycle of stupid beliefs that only get more strongly entrenched as conditions get worse. The less women, the more expensive they are, and thus the less likely that people want them. It continues until someone (or many people) with clout and resources start working on the problem in a serious fashion or the whole thing blows up in their faces. And you all know how pessimistic I am.
They're already suffering for their short-sightedness with no end in sight, but it hasn't reached critical levels yet.
I've read that smugglers have been stealing women in North Korea to sell as wives in China. I don't know if it's true or if it is how widespread it is, but it wouldn't surprise me anyway.

Stealing women in North Korea? If I was living on a diet of grass and rats under constant omnipresent security surveillance ala 1984 in some North Korean farming village, I'd voluntarily go with the smugglers.

Yeah, no shit. That sounds like a pretty easy choice to make. Either continue to fucking starve for the Dear Leader or go with these guys and be someones wife and get fed. Not an ideal solution I admit but at least you get to eat and you'd probably end up with more freedom in the end.
I guess it was too much to hope for that they'd be treated decently. But of course not. Fucking assholes. I should have figured that the kind of man that would buy a wife would also abuse her.
I'm not surprised these woman are treated like slaves. The nationalism/racism between Chinese and Korean has a long history. The idea of a woman as property, bought or not, is even older. Add in desperation on both sides of the border, one for food, the other for wives, and the worst parts of human behavior are revealed.
