"It's not a problem," said Blackheart. "Not everyone is fortunate enough to be abandoned at birth," he joked. "Seriously, don't worry about it."

As the sun began to make it's final dip below the horizon, it seemed as if the world itself changed. Soft lights slowly came on, looking as if they were willowisps. A soft glow emanated fromt the water, looking as if it were filled with moonlight. And in the middle of it all, Li Na floated in the water, long, dark hair taking on a bluish tint as it floated in the water behind her. She looked as glorious and beautiful as the Waternymphs of Old. Tholos was so shocked and awed by the sudden change that he could almost believe he was back in his own time. Pain...Longing...Overwhelming Sorrow. These emotions pulsed through Tholos as he was reminded of what he had once had... and now lost forever. Tears flowed freely down the proud warriors face as he stood in silence.

Li Na felt the grief like a knife, and it made her whirl in the water to face the Spartan. Homesickness? was that was to call it?

She swam across the pool, pulling herself easily out of the water to sit on the edge closest to Tholos. "... it's been a long time since you saw a sunset, hasn't it...."

Quickly trying to bring himself under control, Tholos wiped the tears from his eyes as he replied "Yes it has, it's been 3000 years. It is amazing how one takes nature's beauties for granted." Sitting down on the edge of the pool, Tholos stared at his hands and dangled his feet in the water, embarassed that he had lost control and still nursing the now open wounds his emotions had inflicted upon him.

"You would be surprised how many people get emotional over sunsets," Li Na answered the Spartan as the sky glowed rosy pinks and purples in the distance. "Even Marcus over there is getting misty-eyed."

"Just sit here for a while, if you'd like. Watch the city light up below," she suggested. "More people live here than the Persians brought to Sparta..."

Blackheart pushed his empty plate in and got up. "Damn that was good." He headed over to his room and changed into a pair of swimming trunks. He walked back down and headed over to the pool.

He had the physique of a Greek God and the scars of an old veteran. The shrapnel wounds and the burns were still fresh and partially healed, but the older ones may have faded but they were still visible. His left hand was still paler than the rest of his flesh and there was a star shaped knot of scar tissue at his abdomen. Lines marked old slash wounds on his torso and arms and a spots marked the impacts of energy beams and projectile weapons. A faded line curved half way around his throat.

He walked over to the diving board, jumped up, somersaulted in the air, and hit the water.

Ok, fair's fair. Li Na was checking Blackheart out as he walked to the diving board.
The dimming twilight did not hide the massive scars that even the Demonheart could not heal completely, and they drew the eye as much as the otherwise perfect physique underneath.

Her head turned away just before the splash to protect her eyes. When Blackheart resurfaced, she called over to him teasingly "Finally decide to come out and join us?"

Tholos was stunned by this bit of information. "By the gods! How do that many people fit in one place?" Tholos shook his head in amazement. "But thank you. I would very much like to sit here and watch. It has been a very long time. I haven't sat and watched the sun set since I left my home to begin my quest for the Word." Sadness flashed acrossed his face but was quickly gone.

Tholos' eyes locked onto David as he came out to the pool, a calculating gaze: sizing, judging, calculating strengths and weaknesses, studying his scars and wounds. All the while storing this information away for later, not because he expected a fight, but it was always good to know everything you could about your allies as well as your enemies. Seeing the man's battle-scarred body, Tholos could not help but respect him. A man with that many scars has been sure to have seen many battles.

"Not just that, we're better at growing food to. Use less people and get more tons of food per mile." Blast spoke up as he sat at the other end of the pool. He looked up as several people stared at him.

"What? I was gonna be an anthropologist. We study this crap." He said.

Li Na jumped when Blast spoke up. "When'd you sneak out here?" she asked in surprise. Yes, she'd been that busy watching Blackheart walk. As if Blast and Blackheart hadn't been as enticed by her.

"They're right, however. The food is brought in by trucks to the market, and many people have no clue how where it grows or how." Li Na did not say she was one of them. When she'd escaped her attic prison, she'd spent days just wandering the markets, looking at all the weird food and wondering where it came from. Ember'd laughed her ass off.

"And I'm sorry for all you've lost, Tholos..." she added softly.

Tholos' only response was a nod and a smile, but Li Na could feel the gratitude that Tholos felt for the kind words and hospitality that had been shown him.

"The world has changed in many ways, old man." 'Mike' said as he walked outside, carrying a newspaper. Heaven only knew where he'd found one. The suit he was wearing flowed and shifted, literally reweaving itself and somehow turning into a pair of loose, long swimtrunks.

Or perhaps not long in and of themselves. It was more obvious, now, that the gravity-wielding, self-proclaimed God was the least divine looking of the bunch. At barely five foot even, and quite skinny, he looked like he should be getting his sand castles kicked over in this getup.

"But so many things stay the same. The cycles of nature are one."

Li Na stared at Gravitas... and then began to snicker. In shorts, the illusion of grand presence and age faded away into what looked like a tiny nerdish geek.

One hand went to her mouth, in a vain attempt to smother the giggles.

Blackheart's lips twitched. "Good thing he doesn't need the muscle. He can lift ten times what I can. At least."

Tholos did a double-take when he saw Mike come out to join the rest of them. Leaning closer to Li Na he asked "Is he deformed or is it normal for people to look like scrawny children when they are full grown men?"

"My. I can feel the love and support." Mike rolled his eyes as he sat down by the pool, opening the paper up. "Your roommate had odd choices of periodicals, Argent." He commented absently, apparently taking the jokes about his puny stature in stride. "And no, I'm not deformed. I'm just short."

Li Na had been giggling before over Gravitas' less-than-perfect bod. She had lost the battle as soon as the question was out of Tholos mouth. Her laughter filled the air, forcing her to hold her sides, and then Gravitas made his own comments in that slightly annoyed, insulted voice.

Blackheart's final zinger was all it took to get her laughing so hard she tipped sideways and started to fall into the pool. There was a splash, but not as big as it could have been as Blackheart caught her.

Through giggles she looked up at him and laid her hand on his cheek. "My hero......"

"My lady," he replied gravely, a smile on his face. "Please permit me," he said rising out of the pool to put her gently back on her feet.

As Blackheart levitated out of the pool with her, Li Na places on arm around his shoulder for balance until her feet again touched the tiles of the pool's rim. The size difference was much more noticeable now, her petite 5'3 a full head and shoulders smaller.

But she continued the game. "And does the hero wish a reward for saving the damsel, hmm?" she asked, looking up at him teasingly, her hand on his chest.

The bad thing about Empathy and physical contact? Emotions leak.

So there was a mischievious thrill vibrating skin to skin as Li Na grinned up at David. "If you believe fairy tales, the reward is a kiss ... unless you want to borrow Mike's magazine for other ideas."
