#1 The Golden Compass (reactions)

Post by The Minx »

So I went and saw it a couple of days ago. It was a fun movie. Not a great movie, but a fine piece of entertainment.

It somehow managed to avoid the SOD killing moments that plague so many "kid outmaneuvers a whole bunch of adults" stories.

The world - very nicely executed, and of course, the polar bears, err... I mean the ice bears are way nifty.

For some reason, critics over here have given Dakota Blue Richards an average score as far as acting is concerned. I really don't agree with that at all: she performed quite well. (Aforementioned critics even state this despite acknowledging her as a natural talent -- contradictions ahoy). All in all, the cast performed nicely.

Of course it is the first movie of a trilogy, and the limited resolution at the end rather dampens the impact of the climax... although, of course, they did manage to forge a multi-ethnic alliance, vanquish an evil army, rescue a whole bunch of kids from enslavement, burn down an evil fortress and kick an evil bitch's hiney (albeit temporarily), so it's not that bad of an ending, really. They certainly accomplished more in their first installment than the Fellowship of the Ring did.

And yes, while there was a toning down of the "free-thought versus doctrine-enforcing authority" theme, but it was alluded to enough to get the point across.

EDIT: I had put this in the other GC thread, but then I felt that this was more of a seperate topic, really. If the mods disagree, sorries and please merge.

I just saw this movie. Sucked.Hard.
Sorry people, inconsistent acting, horrible script, the CGI was inconsistent as all hell, no proper style, from the movie, the world seems utterly inconsistent and broken...
Basically, the only positive scenes were polar bears fighting and running.

I have heard this on other occasions. While I agree that the movie wasn't all it was made out to be, it seems an overly harsh assessment. :???:

Of course, I haven't read the book (though I'm aware of what happens in it), so perhaps that has something to do with it.

I havn't, but I've been told it's good, I hope so, because what I saw was not good. It was simply...
Theres demons all around...no normal animals? Are we to believe theres a one-one corrolation between people and animals? Where are the cows for milk? Also, a science depressing all controlling organisation...but flying airships?

Sidenote, those blue orbs were utterly cool, what were they?

I just don't understand the world from the movie. And thats ignoring the movie-issues with pacing.
Also, just me...or did the movie fail to capture you even during the 'battle'?

This is why reading the book, or paying more attention is a Good Thing, Ace.

There are other animals out there, but why would anyone need a pet of any kind, when they have their Daemons. It's like the little voice in your head, but cute and fuzzy!

As for the Blue Whirly, it's an alchemical engine.

I didn't see any simple animals anywhere, which led to my question. If it was in the movie, my mistake.

That blue whirly was awesome.

I thought it was a very good movie, maybe 8/10. Of course, I haven't read the books so that adjusts my score. My friends who had read them probably wouldn't give the movie above a 6. Whatever.

Anyway, yeah. The scenes involving the polar bears were easily the best scenes in the movie.

Me: I want to ride an armored bear!

Sharkbait: Getting to ride an Armored Beard is a cross between petting a unicorn and slapping the Pope

I thought it was good. My favorite characters were the Witches of the Wind.

and Pan was adorable.

I didn't like the book at all. I didn't get very far at all and got bored. So I liked the movie better. Which doesn't happen often.
shark42bait: you are evil...
shark42bait: i admire that in a woman....
I'm a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in an AWESOME rack!
