Cynical Cat wrote:No it isn't. I said at the beginning we wouldn't be going by game mechanics. You're referencing a game mechanic. A description of the spell would be a conjuring forth a series of accurate, low powered energy bolts. And that's what happens.
The fact that "strikes unerringly" has been changed within the spell description to "accurate" is my point. I grant that you alluded to changing game mechanics, but that was one result of it that I didn't expect. It is a relatively minor change overall, but it immediately makes me ask what other spells have been altered to some degree.
Cynical Cat wrote:Given how abstract the D&D hitpoint system is, it isn't really that much of a change even if we were going by game mechanics. A damaging hit in D&D can translate into a bare near miss that burns through most of character's last bit of luck.
While I understand your point, and agree with you in the abstractness overall of the D&D HP system (and in how you've made damage more specific in this game as a result), this is largely irrelevant to the accuracy of Magic Missile bolts.
Cynical Cat wrote:They can miss in all sorts of circumstances. Of course they usually hit. But dodging might mean they don't hit vitals or don't do much through armour. Standing still and letting them hit wherever is not advised.
Am I to infer that Magic Missile bolts are now physical in nature, rather than raw force? You've mentioned that their effectiveness can be blunted by armor, or can miss entirely, which suggests that their nature has changed from raw force to having a physical nature. If this is the case, then that makes sense, but I'd still ask what other spells have been altered for forum gameplay reasons, so we could know in advance.

As much as you're ripping on Comrade Tortoise for trying to make a Shield (which would ordinarily block Magic Missile bolts, when little else will) instead of physically dodging, his action was a result of the normal assumption that Magic Missile bolts don't miss. Since this was not adequately explained beforehand, perhaps you should allow him the chance to edit his post to show him attempt to physically dodge, rather than getting shot while trying to make mystical eymbols.

Actually, I knew that magic missile could miss. I had used the spell earlier and had to edit my post to that effect. However, Corey stood a better chance of trying to shield himself rather than dodge, because the spell usually hits, and he was not close to cover.

Apparently I missed that from before - was explanation given then as to how or why Magic Missile bolts could miss?

No, but i figure it is like any other tracking projectile. If you put something between you and it such that it cannot "see" you and looses signal, or strikes the barrier instead of you then it could miss. Also, if you accelerate faster than it does in one direction it may overshoot you and be unable to re-acquire the target

This would be a plausible explanation to justify being "accurate" as opposed to "unerring," but I'd still like to see an official explanation about if the bolts are indeed physical projectiles; how the bolts track their targets if the "straight through physical matter, because they're force projectiles" isn't being used; and whether or not they can come around for another try if they miss or are parried.

Moreover, I'd like to know what other spells' effects have been changed, and in what manner.

There are no D&D game mechanics. We aren't using them and in any rate they are kludge to describe magic in universe. So stop thinking of D&D spells (I warned you about this at the beginning). Nothing automatically hits. Nothing does x amount of damage. Some spells are more stronger than others. A fireball is a fiery blast. Magic missiles are magical energy bolts. Lightning bolt is a lightning bolt. Nothing automatically hits. There is no armour class or hp. Improved evasion merely means you're good at dodging. You're not getting a fucking list, because I'm not going to go through every single fucking spell with you.

IK mages tend to semi-specialized thematically. Think about that instead of spell game mechanics.

Thank you. With that explanation, spells in the context of this game now make more sense.

You know, I think Ardal is gonna start multiclassing as a barbarian. I find myself playing him that way anyways.

Thank you, good sir. Here's hoping history repeats itself with Zedrin's gunshot.

Dear Gork, the bogginess. I hate my job, and Scottie isn't even on my shift anymore, so it's not just his usual attempts to break me. Though he will be pleased to learn that the Air Force makes me drink. But yeah, been busy.

So, any bets on whether an engine is enough to break open the box and finish this?

I'm pretty much out of clever ideas, and worse, those tentacles with blades probably think I'm a schoolgirl.

I'm outta spells, outta ammo cause I didn't have time to make more, and I'm bleeding from those 'magic missiles' to my lungs.

Where's the Boger and the Meck when we need them?
And what happened with that lightningbolt that Corey threw at him?

He threw cold, not lightning although it is easy to get confused if you skim the post. The lich got iced up and slowed down, but no one is trying to take advantage of that.

Corey maneuvered to keep himself out of the way of the summoned tentacles and to keep others out of his line of fire, taking cover if possible. He dove into the mental pattern containing his reserved Lightning Bolt, and fired off a significant jolt of electricity at the downed lich.

Thought you were talking about the cold zap from his previous post. That's not a lightning bolt. That's a zap from a reserve feat. Much less powerful.

Jack happens. Iron lich's don't care about electricity unless its packing a lot of joules.

Teghe's wounded, out of magic, out of runic bullets. Other than staggering over and kicking him in the head, what can I do.
