#1 EU says 'No' to Kosovo partition

Post by frigidmagi »

BBC
EU special envoy Pieter Feith has said Kosovo will not be split in two because of the divide between ethnic groups.

"There will be no partition of the country, that is not foreseen," he told a news conference in Vienna.

Meanwhile, in Bulgaria, delegations from Kosovo and Serbia met face to face for the first time since Kosovo declared independence.

Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic told Balkan foreign ministers that as long as Serbia existed, Kosovo never would.

We will not admit any parallel security institution to manifest itself on the territory of Kosovo

He said Kosovo would not belong to the world community of sovereign nations and Belgrade would appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague over the legitimacy of Kosovo's declaration.

Mr Jeremic appealed to the international community to defer decisions on recognising Kosovo before a ruling was made.

The head of Kosovo's chamber of commerce, Besim Beqaj, attended the gathering under a United Nations banner, the only way Mr Jeremic said he was prepared to accept Kosovo's presence.

Mr Beqaj said that when he spoke, the Serbian delegation did not stay in the room, a statement that could not be confirmed.

No parallel institutions

At the same time, a meeting was held in Vienna of an international steering group comprising 15 nations from those which have recognised Kosovo as an independent state.

Mr Feith, a Dutch diplomat, was named by the group as its international high representative for Kosovo.

Mr Feith admitted that security in Serbian areas of northern Kosovo was difficult but said he was not aware of reports that some Kosovo Serb police officers had not been carrying out their duties.

"We will not admit any parallel security institution to manifest itself on the territory of Kosovo," he said.

He promised what he called "privileged linkages" between ethnic Serbian communities and Belgrade.
What the hell? What the fucking hell? What pray tell kind of bastard overpumped form of crack cocaine is the not so honorable Pieter Feith smoking? What poor excuse for rational thought is rattling in his clearly underworked skull to announce this bullshit?

This is nothing less but asking for a blood bath. There is no damn reason to attempt to force the Northern Serbs to be within a nation that hates them (with good reason) and that they hate (also with good reason) and want nothing to do with. Is the EU just glorying in tearing off as much land from Serbia as possible or is it trying to ensure that Kosovo is hampered, lamed and crippled by hate and violence from the very start?

This is not a rational decision. This is a moronic decision. This is akin the blunders of the past redrawing of the map that have caused nothing but problems. Yes, let's try to lock these two groups in a cage. They only hate each guts and pray for the other's death. I'm sure it'll work out great never mind all those times where it didn't!

If the EU is suppose to be some cunning diplomatic force of smooth compromise and negotiation to the US bubbling brute force I'm sure as hell not seeing it in this one!

Frankly, this has precedent in almost every secession movement I can think of. Virginia tried to keep what is now West Virginia from counter-seceding in 1861; Tennessee successfully did the same with the Appalachian region of that state in the same time period. The American revolutionaries, obviously, prevented the Loyalists from remaining subjects of the British Crown (at least without packing up and going to Canada first) during the American Revolution. Talk to an Irishman about Northern Ireland sometime and see what answer you get.

Doesn't make it a good idea, but it isn't about to stop.

If the EU is supposed to be some cunning diplomatic force of smooth compromise and negotiation
You gotta be fucking kidding me. Have you actually watched the EU in operation? It's a miracle of biblical proportions that they even got the Euro and the opening of intra-EU borders working to begin with.
