I was just speaking to my friend who is in the Isreali military and he says that things are a lot more tense there then they have been in years, he has lived in Isreal since he was 12 and is now 25. He has a keen eye for politics as he is going to go to Harvard or AU in DC when he finishes the next year of his military term as a International Studies major. Anyway, I wanted to know the positions of people here on the palestine/isreal confliction of views and semi-war/semi-police action going on

First... know how to spell it. Israel.

Second, we have several members of LibArc who are Israeli, and they will be the ones to ask.

Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much: the wheel, New York, wars while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in water having a good time.
But the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man for precisely the same reasons

Sorry, I was plenty not paying attention to my spelling at that point in time. I apologize, and would still like to get peoples' opinions on the situation there.

Lets summarise it this way. Israel might survive for the next 50 years(ignoring PO and such), it will not survive in it's current format.

A short list of issues, which barely cover the major problems.

Water, Israel currently dumps like a third of it's water to Jordan(peace agreement), and it's rapidly running out. Reserves are not being met, and we'll need atleast three years straight of heavy rains to return to a safe situation[Haaretz].

Demographics, Israel is currently fighting a lame demographic fight(quiet Hash  ) against the overbreeding of the arab population and Beduin...by counter over breeding. Thsi is not going to work. But does lead to the third problem.

Social divides. There exist, at least, 5 societies in Israel, which are, at best, cordial and at worst, open war. These are, in order of sanity, National Religious, Seculers, Arabs, Ultra-Orthodox, Beduin/other fringes.

Security, between a hostile population of Palestinians inside our borders, to hostile populations north/north-east/south-west, the situation is not good and the par is getting smaller every year.

And oh right, a social divide that threatens to break apart the system. Unlike the United States, we have a welfare system, and having it break might lead to...issues.

Unlike the United States, we have a welfare system,
Quick correction, the United States does have a welfare system. It is directed by the Department of Health and Human Services. among the services the system offers is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare and others.

While I do not disagree that the US welfare system is poorly run and needs rebuilding to ensure better service those dependent on it, having a lousy system is not the same as having no system. Currently Canada, Australia, Israel, the members of the EU, Norway and Finland all have larger more extensive welfare systems, with Sweden's being one of the largest in proportion.

That is all.
