Fox News calls Michelle Obama "Obama's baby mama"
An on-screen graphic displayed the description during a segment about attacks on the wife of the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Jun. 12, 2008 | An alert reader wrote in just a little while ago to let us know about something he'd spotted on Fox News Wednesday afternoon. During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as "Obama's baby mama."

I checked, and sure enough, as you can see below, our e-mailer was right. In fact, that description was displayed on screen several times during the segment, which featured anchor Megyn Kelly and conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, an FNC contributor.

A clip of the segment in its entirety is below. You may notice that at one point, Malkin says, "By the way, it's not just Republicans who are criticizing some of her comments, but also statements have been made in the left-leaning blog Salon about her comments." I've searched the site, and I can't find anything like what Malkin is talking about. I've e-mailed Malkin asking for clarification -- if and when she responds, I'll update this post.

Update: Malkin responded to my e-mail; she says she misspoke and that she meant to refer to Slate, not Salon.

For those not up on street-slang in America: A 'babymama' is the chick you knocked up and didn't marry, but you go see occassionally because the kid's cute (and you're still getting sex from mama).

I've said before. This will be a one issue race. The issue will be Obama's race.

Would it kill them to at least be subtle about it? I can't believe Clinton racist campaigning compares favourably to them. On second thought, it's good they're being so obvious, that way it's easier to point it out to the slower elements of the populace.

Sublte racism would alienate their base, which are, fundamentally, the psycho-bigots of the Christian Right.

I don't think it would alienate them, it would just go over their heads. Fox News viewers are fundamentally incapable of understanding nuance or subtlety, which explains their voting habits entirely. Non-issues like flag pins and church pastors take on huge importance because they're easy - they can be cast in black and white terms and ask very little of viewers; analyzing a candidate's stance on energy policy or foreign affairs is much more difficult and requires some actual thinking.

That being said, I don't think many people who watch Fox News know what a 'babymama' is, as inner cities are seen as dangerous hives of anti-americanism and welfare usage.

And he was in that classic sex tape with Kim Kardashian. But, did you also know he's Snoop Dogg's cousin AND he was in the 1996 Tim Burton movie Mars Attacks? Suddenly, you're on the Mars Attacks page!'"[/align]
