Wither was Nalifan ... who had lost last time, and his friends had died. Wither set it up so he could win. I'm betting the blocked room was also Wither's doing, to prevent his friends from interfering and getting killed.

That was collateral damage from the battle. The balor explosion and the wall of force weren't good for the castle, nor were the rampaging dragons, fires, beholder disintegrations, etcetera.
