It might not. But the fact remains that if they did they would be able to do shit a lot more heinous than freaking waterboarding, if for no other reason than "Oh, you're on the verge of death, and now you're all better. Now where were we? Oh yes we were turning you inside-out starting with your toes."SirNitram wrote:The Technocracy doesn't torture. It simply brainwashes, fluffs, folds, and dries. Yeah, I noticed. That was gonna be the thing I was gonna say in the write up..........I'm figuring that's because you just want to see what I say abotu the rest of the sheet.Cynical Cat wrote:I haven't written down any gear yet, including foci, as you may have noticed.
General Note: All Mage Characters
This wasn't noted before, but as I was going over some stuff, it made me realieze.
ALL Mage characters, by benefit of GM kindness, get the Chantry Background at 3 dots, for free. You all are belonging to the established chantry, you don't have to buy the background and pay to raise it. Yes, I am kind.
Tevar
Character approved as is. We worked all this out before, so the sheet is fine.
Tortise
Let's see.....
Amnesia flaw.....you don't get to know what your character does and doesn't remember. Read the Flaw in the Player's Handbook. Therefore, we'll strike that out....it's the GM who gets to reveal, little bit at a time, your character. Feel free to remove the flaw and rework the character if you dislike this. Otherwise, you'll learn as your character learns. And don't expect it to be what you've written down.
I need to know your foci, and any talisman's you plan on having in there. The Numbers look ok.
need more info on your character's current stuff. Don't forget they have to be doing something, they just can't hang out in the Chantry all damn day...the Primus would run them out soon enough...
CynicalCat
I need to know your foci (if any). Talismans, if any. I would like a bit more info about your guy's current expectations, and what he does...but that's fine for now. Don't forget to add the "Chantry" background at 3 points (the freebie add on).
Charon
Looks good. Don't forget equipment and foci to be added in later. Same as Cat's stuff.
That's it so far.

It's also the place with the highest casuality/fatality rates in the known Tellurian. After a few years of successful missions, Alexander Babbage caught the bad mission. Everyone catches bad missions.
He was recovered a month later. Half-insane, crippled beyond any rehabilitation, the elders at the Cop decided to attempt extensive therapy as well as transfer the remnants of his biological matter into a nanotech swarm. The transfer was successful; the therapy only somewhat. Plagued with flashbacks and already suffering Demented Eidolon Syndrome, he was finally deemed unable to continue operations in Deep Space.
Eager not to see their deep-space agent plumbed for data and then burned out by the New World Order, the Engineers arranged for a new identity, a modest job in the Sleeper world, and put him through some channels to a Dreamspeaker he had met up with previously. The completely illegal operation went off without a hitch.
Now living as Mark Stark, jokingly referred to as Tony for his ability to get most anything operating, he tries to flesh out a new life. But when has life for the Awakened ever allowed for early retirement?

Talismans are a background and they are one of the backgrounds I didn't buy, so I don't have any.
His expectations? Settle down for a while and learn magic in America, a land where it is much less likely a fomori or Black Spiral Dancer will kick down your door and try to eat your face. Actually have something like a break, since he's finally free of the war against Baba Yaga since the undead witch bit the big one.
Yeah, he's in for some disappointment.
By education he's a nuclear physicist, which was somewhat interrupted by fighting the war against Baba Yaga, and then handwaved through by his now deceased teacher using Mind. He's essentially a vary talented student thaumaturge with a lot of talent and understanding, but a limited knowledge base. The fighting in Russia derailed him from student to soldier-mage.
His foci are laser pointer (Forces) and ring (Prime).

...Wow....
you know....I approve of this.
I laughed a couple of times (the Armani as a power suit......this reminds me somewhat of Gravitas for some reason...), and overall approve of it.
Oh, and incase some ask, yes, he did work out things with me on parts of this sheet, especially the talisman's.

Alright. I can work with that. Hell, anything you think up is bound to be more interesting than what I thought up. I am just a cynic, I am not sufficiently twisted to do the concept justice. So I will leave it to you, the sick bastard that you are.Amnesia flaw.....you don't get to know what your character does and doesn't remember.
I am assuming he will still be able to use the operational knowledge (IE. the psychiatry) and is only making an inference as to how he knows them.
I am still figuring out the foci,
Correspondence, that particular foci consists of hermetic symbols drawn into a PDA touch screen, which he then uses to view whatever it is he is viewing or interacting with (using the stylus)
Mind... His foci there will probably be something like a mantra, rattling off parts of the brain, or theoretical constructs of the mind that he is accessing.
Forces... Math. Either written or spoken.
Prime: A silver necklace depicting an atom.
As far as gear and other specifics and recent action, I will have to ponder

History:
James was born to a well to do family, his father a doctor and his mother a tenured nurse. His father paid for him to attend private school for the first few years of his life until his parents went through a divorce when he was ten. His mother gained custody and, unable to afford a private school enrolled him in the public education system. He graduated high school with fairly high grades, but nothing amazing enough to warrent any full ride scholarships. His father, trying to force him along a similar path as himself, offered to pay for his further education at long as it was in the medical field. James took him up on the offer but quickly found that while he enjoyed the idea of fixing broken people, he disliked what was actually involved with it. By the same token, though, he also found he enjoyed fixing broken anything, especially if it was complicated like the human body, or electronics.
He tried to switch his major to a compsci degree, but his father rescinded his offer of schooling when he found out he wouldn't be persuing medicine. He tried to explain his plan to cross the two fields, but his father would have none of it. Finding himself without a source of tuition and no money of his own he was forced to drop out. Bitter about this, he swore he would show up his father somehow.
He soon after picked up a job with the OUTLOOK group, a biotech think-tank for the medical community. Nothing more then a glorified errand boy he worked his ass off, trying to live up to James Adams' version of the American Dream. Well, kind of. While the pay was decent, the hours were long and it was nearly impossible for him to find time to go back to school. So he studied his job. And when the papers and files left laying around weren't enough, he made his first mistake. He managed to gain access to the server room and install a trojan onto the network. The mistake wasn't trying to do this, it was that he was that he wasn't nearly as good as he thought he was.
This was the point in his life where things changed, though for better or for worse is a matter of opinion. He got caught by the SysAdmin very shortly thereafter. However, this individual was a bit different then the normal run of the mill Bastard Operator From Hell. Brent 'Phage' Stull, admin by day, deviant by night and general double-dealer all the time. He spent the next little while working on James, and Awakening him to a larger, more important world. Brent was a Virtual Adept, working deep cover inside of OUTLOOK, which it turned out was a front company for the Progenitors. He recruited James into the war and taught him ways of hacking systems that were beyond anything he had ever concieved before. What he learned he wanted to use, to finally show his father that he had been right to not want to be a doctor, to persue his own path. But it couldn't work that way.
James kept up his work at OUTLOOK, helping Phage gain insight into the inner workings of the Technocracy's latest pet genetics project. It was what could be considered his first op, and that night left him with enough memories for a lifetime. The building was nothing but an inferno when they left. One less Technocracy outpost to worry about, one step closer to Reality 2.0.
When they got back to the chantry, others were waiting. Phage and James were both arrested by the chantry elders and seperated. The long hours that night spent in a solitary pocket space turned to days and weeks. The only visits he recieved was for the basics of sustinance and his captors to question him again. His mind, his memories, his body and pattern were picked over, scrutinized, analyzed and obsessed over.
Finally he was let free and returned, though his chantry wanted nothing to do with him. He eventually got the full story. Phage wasn't who he was suppose to be. It came to light that when the great exodus of the Adepts and Etherites occured, the Technocracy used the event to their own ends and planted agents into the Traditions disguised as former Technomancers. Phage had been a Progenitor spy sent in as a Virtual Adept. His deep cover assignment to OUTLOOK was no coincidence and had been arranged by the higher levels on both sides, each equally believing themselves to be solely responsible. Under the guise of deep cover he reported to his hidden superiors and fed enough bits and pieces back to keep the Traditions hungry. He had recruited James as a second generation spy. But the chantry leaders had finally caught on and made their move. Phage was no more. They came to the concensus that James knew nothing about what was happening and was innocent, though that didn't stop a lot of people from talking and wondering.
With his chantry turning their backs on him, and nowhere to turn to and no one who trusted him he was like an orphan moved from home to home. He finally came to his current chantry and has started to settle in, though he's still skittish, waiting for the next kick to come. It's always the same for him, alright in the beginning but as soon as people start learning who he is and what happened with him, the trust goes away, the looks get in their eyes. They always want to know if he's really on their side, or if he's just a traitor, a spy, just like his mentor. And to that end he's swore to uphold his tradition's principles and goals, to be an unquestionable Adept. He does it because he believes it fully, and deep down hopes that if he shows them that there is nothing in his heart and mind except their paradigm that they'll embrace him again, forget his past and let him have a real future.

Varying rumors surround the Archmage known as Darek Steele. His vague, faint accent places him of Spanish descent, and his sometimes use of archiac words support he was alive during the Dark Ages. Most of his life has been lost to the ages, and he prefers to keep it that way.
Approximately 100 years ago, he and a Cabal of various Mages came to the location of the nascent town of Point Pleasant and established the Chantry of Silverguard on top of a powerful Node. Steele has dedicated his life to the acquisition of knowledge, both mundane and magickal. He has been known to disappear from the Chantry for months at a time, with little to no notice, and return just as mysteriously - during these times, he leaves Gren and Rowin in charge of the chantry. He also has claimed the entire town of Point Pleasant as his personal protectorate, leaving those who follow him and belong to his chantry to safeguard it from Nephandic and other assorted influences.
Image:
Darek Steele is rarely seen in person, his face seen far less. He stands as a tall man, beneath the heavy black robes he wears, his body looks reasonably fit. Shadows seem to deepen and light dim when he's close by. Talking to the man is a intimidating feet on it's own, and when he chooses his speak, it's in a whispery voice that seems to almost rumble like thunder. Should he be seen with the heavy cowl of his robes not casting his face into shadow, he looks to be a man in his late fifties, his skin nutty brown as if he spends extreme amounts of time in the sunlight, his face lined by toi much time in the weather. His hair is long, salt and pepper colored, and tied into a tail.
Sanctum:
Steel maintains a large Sanctum within the Chantry's Mansion. The rooms he normally occupied have been via use of the Correspodence Sphere to be larger on the inside, than the mansion's floor plan would allow. The sanctum is done in highly polished wood, gilded with lines of platinum and gold. He maintains a massive Library filled with his own
research and grimoires, as well as gifts from other Mages of the various Traditions. For some reason, looking outside of the gilded windows of the Sanctum, reveals not the landscape of the Estate it resides on..but a idealic land, looking out over a massive sparkling lake, and a forest of deep, rich foliage.
Familiar:
Rumor, the Moor Cat
Rumor is a large cat, standing at nearly 4ft tall, and nearly 8ft long. His fur is varying grades of black, giving him almost perfect camouflage except for his two large, human-like yellow eyes. Rumor never speaks to anyone in the Chantry, though he is capable of human speech. He prefers to come and go on whim, able to disappear into shadows easily, and reappear where ever he likes. One thing though, where ever Rumor appears, his master is usually not far behind, leading to the common saying amongst Tradition Members, 'Where ever Steele goes, Rumor proceeds him.'

Background
Born in the late early 1900's in Chicago, Gren had a poor childhood. Sickly, his parents having little money to get him treatment, he nearly died. That is when a Progenitor noticed the boy. Young Gren was taken in by the Progenitor, healed, and indoctrined into the Technocracy - though he didn't follow his mentor's path, and instead was drawn to the Analytical Engineers. When the AE's defected, Gren went with them, and became a Virtual Adept.
In the interum, he's become a Adept's Adept.
He joined with the Silverguard Chantry fifteen years after it's founding, when it's resident Virtual Adept was eliminated by a Technocratic HIT Squad. He is often at odds with Darek on how the Chantry should be run in these modern times, though he always does what's right for it. As such, Steele leaves him and his wife, Lady Rowin, in charge on his frequent excursions - and while Gren doesn't like the idea of being incharge, he accepts the responsibility.
Image:
Gren looks like a Caucasian man in his late thirties. He has plain brown eyes, brownish-black hair, and lightly tanned skin. He has a permanent three day stubble, and is always wearing a fedora and trench coat - like a old 1920's Private Dick.

Lady Rowin was born in gypsy family of Spanish descent during the 1700's. She was taken in by her lover, who himself was a Verbena Mage. They remained together for 50 years, traveling Europe, selling "Miracles"to the town folk for a living. Eventually, Rowin left her Mentor and lover, soon after discovering Balador - the Ectastic Pleasure dome. She spent a century studying with the Cultist and a Verbena Mage there, learning knew ways to look at magick and how to do things.
She was one of the original Cabal Members who founded the Silverguard Chantry, along with Darek Steele. She is tied with the land of Point Pleasant, and often is seen near the lake and river by it. She is very motherly, tending to keep the Chantry in order, helping the servants attend their duties, and is happily married to her husband of some
three decades, Gren.
Along with Gren, she runs the Chantry when Darek is on his extended constitutionals.

He uses a small hover chair to get around since his legs could not support his form.

the Character was in play LONG before I started posting to messgae boards (B4 can vouch for that). I got to used to the character though, and loved him so much, I kept using the name. The character ended up a Exemplar of Forces..so obviously I've tuned him down for his NPC appearance here.
And honestly...I like seeing him around (don't worry, he won't be around TO much....he likes to stay in the Umbra a lot...), so I made him the Chantry's founder for the game. The other NPC's (aside from Doctor Zoom) are all from the same game which Darek Steele appeared in.....
Doctor Zoom is brought on by me having watched "End of the World" recently, and wanted a Mox of Balhoon stand in.....so Doctor Zoom looks like the Mox of Balhoon....

Yes, I less-than-fondly remember Gren's teachings on the nature of Correspondence and how to get to know it. It involved rocks and him throwing them at me. That just makes him more of a Mary Sue, not less.
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

Gren wasn't DS' character. That was just the way Gren taught my character the basics of spacial perceptions. Oddly enough, he learned quickly. It only took two concussions.

No....Cat is talking about Steele when he says my Mary Sue...
After all, it's not like there's a big gap between Steele and Silver....
But come now....It's not like I'm going to change my game plans or the NPC's because cat cries "Mary Sue!" on one of the NPC's who will be rarely seen, much less felt amongst the PC's for anything more than brief periods of time. So....
Yes, enjoy reading the character sheet for my Mary Sue who is a flawed, but ancient Mage.
And so it's clear...the insult wasn't lost on me Cynical. You've the option of exiting the game if you feel the NPC will "ruin" things. He's not there to bail your asses out of the fire unless you get over your heads.
The game will start tomorrow. Frigid, if you're done with the sheet, I need it posted to this thread so I may archive it with the others, along with the NPC sheet and Chantry notes.

I was being insulting?
I was merely pointing out that the emperor is butt naked.

Maybe so, but it'd be no different than using Nalifan as a starting point for low-level adventurers. All he'd be doing is giving a push and a firm "Go do it yourself".

1) If Nalifan did that, it would still be some hot Mary Sue action.LadyTevar wrote:Maybe so, but it'd be no different than using Nalifan as a starting point for low-level adventurers. All he'd be doing is giving a push and a firm "Go do it yourself".
2) This is more than that. He's our boss, head of the Chantry, the guy who might show up like Batman and save our asses (or might not, see The Dark Knight Returns ).
I'm not saying it will ruin the game, I'm just pointing out it is a blatant Mary Sue. Hell, DS has an account at Librium under that name. It's a potential failure point of the campaign, a classic one as a matter of fact (GM Character). I'm just pointing it out.
And pointing out the Emperor is butt fucking naked to those who down play it. He's a Mary Sue. It might not be much of a problem, but it could become a serious one.
So stop playing interference. The only subject under contention is whether or not he's a Mary Sue and he's a classic example. Move along. We'll see if it harms the game.
