#1 My new minion (laptop)

Post by rhoenix »

Well, my old Apple Powerbook g4 finally bit the dust, due to its power adapter port. B4 is quite probably right in that some solder has come loose, but this will take way too much to fix.

So, new computer. I'd prefer a laptop, and one that will last me a good number of years. For such a laptop, I want a 15" or better screen, at least 2gb of RAM, a CD/DVD burner drive, a 250gb hard drive, 512mb+ video memory, and a laptop model free of weird worries about equipment failures at random.

For a desktop, the same specs basically. I'm leaning away this option though still considering it, as it would be more expandable, though much less portable.

Thoughts, suggestions, and warnings are appreciated in advance.

*sighs* Video memory doesn't matter.
Look at the ASUS and HP laptops offered on their websites, at the 15 inch area you should be able to find good deals but the best graphics card for laptops will be at the 17 inch screen size.

My thanks Ace - I was quite glad to be wrong about my laptop's AC adapter, as it works fine now with the new one.

And as for video memory, I was primarily thinking of FS2 Open and Homeworld 2.

Thread, ARISE! *necromances thread*

Ok, my laptop is still functional, it's just become...well, old.

I'm in the market for a well-built, long-lasting (as in lifecycle of the machine, not necessarily battery life), dependable new laptop. My current one is an Apple Powerbook G4 (from about 3 months before Apple changed to Intel cpu's), and I've been quite satisfied with it, apart from the processor beginning to show its age against newer machines and applications now.

So, for a machine that's this well-made, this says to me either Apple, or Lenovo manufacturer. as Lenovo has kept up the very high quality IBM was known for in their computers. IBM Thinkpads were legendary in the computer industry for that reason, and Lenovo, it appears, is keeping up the tradition.

So, by all means, give your opinions if you've one. I'm open to all considerations.

How about we steer far away from boutique manufactors turned commodity high end with highly overpriced items? Atleast apple offers OS X for the overpriced deal.

A modern MacBook or a macbook pro could do the trick for you (by all means, avoid the MBA). I'm not sure about Lenovo pads, someone over at SDN like Phongn would know more about the U.S. laptop market, I just can't keep track.
