Saw this today and thought I'd engage in a little GM hipsterdom. Eclipse Phase doesn't show up even on the expanded list of games, while Dark Heresy, White Wolf, and Iron Kingdoms all feature prominently.

Granted, the game after Eclipse Phase, which was going to be Dragon Age or Star Wars makes me pretty mainstream (especially Star Wars), but for now, I get security through obscurity.

Interesting though is not the continued dominance of Pathfinder, that was to be sadly expected, but how the current D&D breakdown is. Overall, D&D outnumbers Pathfinder, but it's split between editions. 4E is the clear loser here with just a little over 8% of the total games on Roll20, but 5th edition is rising fast. Also interesting is that the total number of players for 3.5 and Pathfinder are roughly the same, despite the disparity in total running games.

In any event, it's an interesting exercise in data crunching.

There is some really strange grouping going on in there. World of Darkness, New World of Darkness, Vampire: The Masquerade and 'White Wolf' as...different categories? What does 'Other Games' really even mean when you have some really niche stuff like Fiasco on the same list that isn't grouped into that category? Is 'Warhammer 40k' a category, or just the wargame? If the latter, then I have a somewhat hard time believing that none of the RPGs other than Dark Heresy made the cut of the longer list, so are they grouped into Dark Heresy?

I agree with White Heaven. With the exception of D&D, the groups are all over the damn place, and it's unclear whether and how they're meant to overlap in the cases they seem to.

Shit, I'm going to have to go through my collection. I've got some random ass off the wall one shot rpgs on my shelves that I've never seen anywhere else. Would love to know if anyone else here has ever given them a shot.

You want to talk about obscure games? Let us talk about obscure games. My first three RPGs were fucking Rolemaster, a thing called The Guide to Adventure, and Star Wars d20 (pre-Saga). I played them more or less at the same time, but in roughly that order. I want to focus on The Guide to Adventure here because nobody's ever heard of it. And I mean nobody, I played the damn thing and I haven't heard of it either! I had to go diving into miraculously preserved ancient internet archives to find out what the name of the bloody thing was, and I'm still mystified as to where exactly the GM got a hold of it. All I remember is that he gave me a PDF of it and I made an amoral mercenary assassin equipped with daggers and quilted armour. I think the system was sort of point-buy but with starting classes to focus your points, but I don't recall anything else. Oh and I find it interesting, in retrospect, that the game had quilted armour, as many games forget that padded jacks were a thing. Though at the time I just thought it was lame that it wasn't leather armour, but I bought it anyway because it had the best stats for my starting budget.
