First Hungarian soldier dies in Afghanistan

A Hungarian soldier was killed Tuesday in northern Afghanistan, a Hungarian Defense Ministry spokeswoman told CNN.

It is the first reported Hungarian death in the Afghan war, according to statistics compiled by CNN.

The incident took place ar around 9:30 a.m. in Baghlan city, where the soldier was attempting to defuse a bomb after a report of a blast that struck a civilian, the spokeswoman said.

He was a member of the provincial reconstruction team as well as the unit's bomb squad, she said.

Hungary, one of countries participating in NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, has around 200 soldiers in the provincial reconstruction team in Baghlan province.

NATO had reported a soldier killed by an explosion in the north, but as is official practice, the alliance did not release the soldier's nationality
