To give my answer on previous questions about why people like it. The jokes are amusing, the writing is usually good and, more importantly, clever. It's obvious that the people involved actually care about what they are producing and are putting some effort into the writing. That can turn even the silliest of premises into a good, or at least watchable, production.

The storylines aren't that creative. Generally by the opening scene I could tell you exactly what's going to happen by the end, but getting to the end is still a barrel of laughs and some fairly witty writing.

Also, anyone who doesn't like a show where they got John de Lancie to, essentially, reprise his role as Q (Seriously, all it was missing was him referring to someone as "Mon Capitan") is made of fail and will be doomed to the glue and gelatin factory.

Oh yeah, the Pony thread lives!

An episode about cider, eh? :drunk:

Poor Dashie. I felt for her, I really did. I mean, clearly she's an alcoholic a ciderholic and denying her her fix was just criminal.

Also, the "friendship report" is the best one EVER. I mean seriously. "I don't have anything to report because I was right all along and already knew my friends had my back" is pretty awesome. Doubly so coming from Bestpony aka Applejack. I also like it for the subtler touch: the fact that AJ feels she can send, in essence, a casual letter to the Princess at all says something about the relationship between Celestia and her Element Bearers, I think.

Why do you dislike ponies?

[hr]

So, how about some thoughts on Hasbro changing Derpy's voice and taking out RD calling her "Derpy" on iTunes?

Personally, it does not bug me near as much as some of the fandom. In all honesty, I actually prefer her new voice to what it was originally. Taking out the name was kinda lame, but whatevs.

I also didn't have a problem with the scene as it was originally, and I guess the only thing bugging me is the backlash over how they were apparently making fun of retarded people...or something. She's a clumsy character, like we haven't seen that before. The eyes are simply a fan nod due to an early animation error, and well...the voice was kinda a mistake anyway because Tabitha St. Germain thought she was voicing a male character, and from what I understand was drawing from her Ed, Edd 'n Eddy experience, likely because she was voicing a character engaged in comicly destructive hijinks.

So yeah, I don't get the backlash at all. But eh, people will get worked up over all sorts of crazy things, such is life.

Given the fact that the rakghouls were a moderate nonthreat for the player characters I suspect the ponies can handle them.

Admittedly it did stretch credibility at points: "Hey, I have this totally awesome brother who I'm best friends with but have not mentioned at all, ever..." Overall though, and especially from the end of part 1, I would describe the episode as 'off the chain.' The big reveal moment at the end of pt. 1 for Cadence was actually kind of freaky, and the background music was used to great effect.

I for one certainly hope that Chrysalis comes back.

I also hope that Chrysalis and her Changelings return. They're too good to waste as a villain.

The "This Day" aria was absolutely beautiful. I could watch it over and over. Yes, Celestia went down like a bitch, but even Chrysalis was shocked she did it -- witness her immediate gloating over how powerful Shining Shield's love had made her.
IOW: Chrysalis only beat Celestia because of the Power of Love -- same as what beat Chrysalis in the end.

I did love the Mane Six v/ the Changelings. Fluttershy pretending to be one of them to fool a few. PinkyPie "Do me! Do Me! .... Oh, I've seen better." Then came the Twilight-Magic Gatling Horn (with Pinky cranking Twilight's Tail). And the Party Cannon works as an offensive weapon. Never did see what Rarity was doing...

PONIES!

So the first eight minutes of season 3 is out On Demand now.
It's a link hidden by the spoiler tags. If you open it it's your own damn fault. :violin:

To repost what I've said elsewhere:

I won't post spoilers, but all I can say is that I am excited for the premiere. Just seeing what little I did has me majorly psyched up. The music, the promise of the story, the voice-acting and the visuals (my God the visuals) are just plain awesome.

I fully predict there will be a lot to discuss once this has aired.

I really can't wait for it to air!
Spoiler: show
From a sneak peek within the Crystal Empire, the Shadow Unicorn sucked the joy out of life for all the Earth Ponies in the Empire. (you did notice they were all Earth Ponies in those clips, right?) That's why Cadence is there, because of her ability to make Ponies happy. The sneak peek song about helping the Crystal Ponies is going to lead to something very bad, I think. Epic Fail, in fact.

Warning: A ramble on ponies.

Watched on Saturday afternoon, was kind of... disappointed? I know I probably shouldn't have expected too much from a marketing vehicle yet it felt like a let-down compared to the prior season premieres/finales. The musical numbers were merely adequate, a phoned-in version of last season's finale. Some things were just weirdly inconsistent, like why Luna would have so many doubts about Twilight Sparkle's powers considering the defeat of Nightmare Moon and everything since. Shining Armor and Cadence are still ciphers, despite ample opportunity to provide them with more characterization, and making them more central to the story seemed like a promotional gimmick. I also found myself wondering why I should care so much about the welfare of the crystal ponies - The premiere 2-parter at least established Ponyville and the main characters before introducing the villain. The crystal empire has never been mentioned before, we've never met a crystal pony before, and the implications for Ponyville were kind of absent. Not to sound too cruel, but I'm just going to paraphrase the opposing viewpoint news segment from the film "Airplane!"

"They knew what they were getting into when they assented to be ruled by a giant shadow horse. I say let 'em suffer!"

The issue of the villain being my main problem with the episode. Sombra had no personality, no memorable lines, and didn't really feel all that impressive or threatening. Nightmare Moon worked because she was genuinely menacing, and was the beneficiary of some really cool and ominous foreshadowing. Discord worked because of the ubiquitous nerdboner for Star Trek actors appearing in other media (Gargoyles, zomg), and Chrysalis was a very classical antagonist and a spot-on homage to the Disney tradition. Sombra just seemed like a sort of toothless, unimposing parody of Sauron.

It also puts this franchise no closer to realizing my "fevered dream episode" which totally isn't a result of a movie I saw this weekend: a former student of Celestia striking out for revenge on his teacher and only Twilight Sparkle (assumed dead after a botched mission lesson about the magic of friendship) can stop him. This eccentric rogue pony may or may not be voiced by Javier Bardem and have an uncanny blonde mane.

I will say that a full episode could probably be made from an explanation for why Pinkie Pie has a Fluttershy suit. Most of what happened with the other 5 ponies was pretty amusing, so the episode did have that going for it. It wasn't a terrible episode or anything, just disappointing.

What is this handbook you refer to? I'm not familiar. I'm judging the villain for his lack of charisma, primarily. I think the episode would have benefited from some build-up that wasn't exposition from Celestia.
