#1 Iran fails at photoshop

Post by General Havoc »

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/05/busted-irans-jarring-photoshopped-missile-test-image/51940/
Remember back in 2008, when Iran Photoshopped an extra missile into a photograph of its missile test? Turns out, bad habits die hard. The Atlantic Wire has caught Iran's semi-official Mehrs News Agency (MNA) using another digitally-altered image to depict its missile program. Only this time, the image is even more egregiously Photoshopped.

On the homepage of its website today, the image appears next to a story downplaying the threat of Iran's ballistic missile program. It's a small image but upon closer inspection, you can see that something is amiss.

According to a Google search, that image first appeared on the Internet on July 9, 2008 on a Word Press site called "What the Crap?" That time stamp would've been just after Iran was originally busted for Photoshopping an image of its missile test. During that time, a number of clever news watchers produced a series of prank versions of the Iran missile launch like this one and this one, which transformed the embarrassing episode into a funny Internet meme. Humorously, it appears Iran is now using images from the meme it created to depict its own missile program. Even more humorously, it appears the Photoshopped image MNA picked includes a photo of loathed Star Wars prequel character Jar Jar Binks. Take a closer look:

Obviously, we can't think of anything dumber than using an image from a meme created to mock your regime in a real-life news story. Then again, this is Iran.

On another note, we should add that today is May 4, otherwise known as Star Wars Day in honor of the 35th anniversary of the film. So, you never know, this could be a way for someone in Tehran to silently celebrate the nerd holiday. If it is, we're sorry we spilled the beans on your prank. We hope President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be merciful and, on a similar note, we hope George Lucas doesn't sue you.
It's one thing to photoshop images of your missile test to make yourself look awesome. It's quite another to use a blatantly faked meme picture of photoshopped missile tests that includes a picture of Jar Jar Binks.

Yeah. That's right. Check this out:

Image

That is the actual image that Iran's state-run press released to the world.

Aaaaaah-hahahahahaha

Someone either is a troll in Iran, or... yeah, that somehow slipped out. I'm not sure which is more likely, or funnier to contemplate.

I'm honestly thinking that the artist responsible was the one trolling, and Iran's government officials didn't notice before they posted it.

Whoops.

No wait, this can't be an actual Iranian release. It just can't.

Okay, we mock Jar Jar. But he did contribute greatly to a massively incompetent and primitive force defeating a much more technologically sophisticated one. Furthermore as his airtime got cut in the next two movies I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Binks didn't decide to find somewhere he'd be more appreciated.

Basically, this is a very ominous development and I'm going to get back to digging my bomb shelter.

Either Jar-Jar grew a lot bigger since the PT or the Iranians are deploying some really tiny missiles.
The exhaust trails look almost real (unlike the missiles). Still essentially show Iranian missile crews have no fucking clue what they're doing what with missiles going every which way (with at least one apparently heading back to the launch site) but maybe that's intentional?

Yeah, but that's how they lure you in. You'll have the Army rolling in all 'we bad' with their Abrams and Bradleys and Strikers, and they'll have missiles shooting every which way, then here comes a brave band with Jar Jar in the lead and the next thing you know he's swinging from the cannons and chaos erupts and BAM! Ahmadinejad in the White House.

Fuck dude, we all saw it with our own eyes. This is why nobody ever learns from history.

Better let the battle groups around the Gulf know to watch out for F-14s being piloted by plucky pre-teens.

Just trust me on this.

Did any of you morons read the actual article? The author was mocking the paranoid idiocy of Americans and Europeans.

Arrogant empires claim they need to put ballistic missile shields up to protect people from the craaaaaazy Iranian threat.

This isn't true. The picture symbolizes how absurd the whole situation is. Iranian press releases often use file or stock photos that represent or symbolize the theme of the article. If you read the text, you'll see there's no misrepresentation.

Really? Goodness, it's a lucky thing you're here to share your wisdom with us denizens of Earth. Care to quote the part of the article you're talking about, to prove that you're not deserving of a helmet and a short yellow bus?

Oh God! Am I getting trolled again?! Two trollings in one thread?!

I'm going to assume that you are trolling, as it makes me feel better than thinking you are honestly that fucking soaked in a miasma of stupid that you can somehow read laughing at stupid European and American scare tactics into a news article that is clearly pointed directly at Iran. And that furthermore we are so ignorant as to BELIEVE this even though the grand majority of replies to this thread have been, essentially, "Pics or it didn't happen".

2/10, troll better.

I think Destructionator may have a round-about sort of point though. Most Americans, in their day-to-day existence, do not think much about Iran or geopolitics in general. Sure, it may make a decent couple of lines in a presidential stump speech, but I am willing to wager that the majority of people in the west do not fear or hate Iran, at least not enough to justify a military conflict. Saddam Hussein made a perfect foil for the west, a showy cold-war era strongman made for television - Ahmadinejad is both significantly less charismatic and his business-casual engineer attire does little to bolster his image as a figure to be reckoned with.

However, most westerners do have very strong opinions about the Star Wars prequel trilogy. If the Military-Industrial Cornplex* can create a mental association between the Iranian regime and the unhinged madness of George Lucas, then they can easily sell a war which will bolster their profits at the expense of taxpayers.

*The real winners of a closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a shut-down of Iranian oil production would be ethanol producers... Think about it.

Those flags are obviously fake!!!!!!!!!!1

but what is it about?

"A senior Iranian military official says all military bases in the Middle East are within the range of the Iranian-designed and -built missiles. "

See, the picture represents the idea behind it, not a literal representation of anything.
