Mike's head shot up, and he coloured a little. "Thanks." He took the cream. He answered her: "That's my job. Where are those burns again?"

"My back..." she said reluctantly, not looking forward to what she knew was going to happen. She didn't want him to have to see this... it was probably a goddamn mess, and on top of that it was a sign that Jaycee had gotten her. Especially the burn on her neck.
Even as she had been relatively strong while the blows had been administered, the blush of shame crept into her cheeks in the aftermath.

He handed over the cream, reaching down to squeeze Sherry's shoulder. He glanced at her for a long moment, and something seemed to click in his mind. He gave Mike a pat on the back and prepared to depart.

"Petro," she whispered, "about the Blackcaps... we can't..." she struggled to sit up, placing a hand on her forehead. "We can't send them out... he's planning on picking them off..."
He seemed to want to leave, and she grabbed at his wrist.
"Can't let that happen... okay? We'll get him ourselves... they're just kids..."

He gently pressed her back down. "I'll keep them in. And yeah, we'll get him," he promised her. He glanced over at Mike. "You just let Mike take care of you, Tiger. I'll be back in here in a bit."
After they'd had the opportunity to have a 'moment' or two. If one of them being injured and bedridden was what it took for them both to slow down and do that long, meaningful look into each other's eyes... fine then.

He nodded at Petro aimlessly. "C'mon then." He nudged her until she rolled over, and tugged her shirt up. He hissed. "Christ." He tensed for a moment, then let his breath out. Calm, Mike. He unscrewed the bottle and scooped some cream out. "This is gonna be cold." He said randomly, and started applying it.

She bit down on the comforter, unable to stop a startled Ah! from escaping her lips as he touched the wound. God, it hurt... it hurt worse now than it had when it happened, because she didn't have that adrenaline, that combat high, opiate of all blessed opiates...
Her body's instincts were frighteningly strong, the urge to turn back and slug him square in the jaw almost overwhelming... but she reminded herself that Jaycee was gone. This was Mike. She trusted Mike. Even if he wanted to hurt her, she wasn't sure he had it in him to hurt anyone.

He felt it as she twitched when he touched the burn. "Sorry. Just another minute." He quickly applied more cream, using the maxim that too much is just enough. He finished and wiped his fingers clean on his labcoat absent-mindedly. "Done."

She whimpered him something that sounded like a thank-you, still feeling fingers--Mike's or Jaycee's, who the fuck knew--ghosting over the injuries long after he'd removed his hands. Her sense of touch and texture seemed amplified ever since he'd placed the tape over her eyes, as though trying to make up for the fact that she feared she'd lose her vision again.
Her grip on the bed's dressings relaxed and she exhaled a long breath.

She nodded, reaching out and brushing her hair up to allow him better access to the burn. There were still remnants of rolling paper and ash stuck into its circumference--only about the surface of a dime. A dirty wound. Undoubtedly going to become infected due to the foriegn material.

He winced. "Crap. I'm gonna have to use the alcohol." He dabbed a cotton bud in the bottle of medicinal alcohol and started teasing the debris out.

"Okay," she said unsteadily. This was going to hurt, she knew, but she again stayed quiet throughout the procedure. She wasn't going to knowingly make his job any harder than it already was.

He finished getting the crap out, and doused a cotton pad in the alcohol. "Okay." He said. "This is going to hurt. A lot." He clapped the alcohol-saturated pad against the burn.

She whimpered like a kicked dog, but didn't curse at him. He was doing the best he could with what they had been given; she was grateful.

"Sorry." He repeated, and wiped the burn one more time.
He picked up the cream bottle again, and smeared some on. Then he taped some gauze over it and the burns on her back, allowing them to breathe.
He sighed. "I'm done."

"Thank you," she said quietly. The rest didn't really need to be said: for more than just the help.
"Feel like my brain got squished in my fucking skull," she slurred, the bruises on her cheeks and around her mouth beginning to colour darker. She looked miserable.

"Strictly speaking, it did. You're gonna have to take things easy for a few days. Drink as much as you can, too. You lost a lot of blood." He reached over her shoulder, holding the cup again.

"Looked like somebody tried to paint the building with me," she said morosely, for the first time letting a look of genuine regret show. She looked up at him from that swollen, almost unrecognizable face, and weakly grabbed for his hand.

He grabbed it back. "Hey." He whispered. "You'll be fine. We'll get the bastard, and we'll spread him across the whole damn city."

"I'm not worried about me," she said, "or him." She kept her eyes on Mike's, trying to appear angry. "He's going to try to pick off my men..." But as opposed to anger, instead she just looked like she was in pain.

He squeezed her hand. "They'll be fine. Petro and Zed know what they're doing." He brushed a lock of hair out of her brown eye.

She looked away, not watching him. For a moment she appeared to drift off, but she knew that wasn't an option. After a few moments of silence, she said:
"Jaycee planted Ned and the others here to get me. Instead Melanie nearly died."
No self-loathing, no guilt, just a cold reflection.

He sighed. "Shit happens. But here, it didn't. You and Melanie are alive, and Ned and the others are dead. That's what I'd call a win."

"Except he isn't," she said, no need to clarify the pronoun. "Mike, he's not going to stop. All he has to live for is hurting us now." She looked up to him, smiled as best she could through the blood and the scrapes. "We're gonna have to go out ourselves. Like old times, just the Irregulars out to fuck up everyone else's shit."
She rested against his chest, calming down some as the initial shock of the injury and the treatment passed.
"He's a miserable creature... we can't beat him when it comes to brutality. But we can hit him where it hurts: his lack of any sort of support structure." She coughed, took another sip of water. "His own people don't trust him because he'd look out for them. They're just afraid of his retribution. Don't blame 'em."
As if on auto-pilot, she recalled...
